Yes there is a built in option in Windows to enable screenshots from a directdraw game without horribly messed colors.
It is a simple registry option that needs to be enabled.
The patches are available here:
http://knights.x10hosting.com/KaM/Downloads/prntscr.zip
(they talk about another game in the readme, but this fix is universal and works for SPMBT too.)
So now you can take a screenshot from the game even if it is running in full screen with the print screen button. Enjoy. :)

So all I need to do is apply the patch? Or is there some registry option that I also have to enable after applying the patch? Thanks.

Oh well... that link is dead.
I wonder, maybe it's so difficult to attach the file on the shrapnelgames domain.

I attaced the fix to this post, but it is really just a simple Windows registry value change.
You can even make the "fix" yoursef.
Simply copy/paste the text to notepad and then save it as .reg file and run it.
For x86 systems use this:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectDraw]
"EnablePrintScreen"=dword:00000001
If you have a 64 bit system use this instead:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\ DirectDraw]
"EnablePrintScreen"=dword:00000001

The attached ZIP packgage (prntscr-fix.zip) comes with a readme.txt file that tells you what to do:
~ INSTALLATION ~
1. Find out if you're running a 32-bit or a 64-bit version of Windows
IF RUNNING A 32-BIT VERSION
2. Double-click prntscr.reg
3. When it asks whether to continue, choose yes
4. The fix has been applied!
IF RUNNING A 64-BIT VERSION
2. Double-click prntscr_x64.reg
3. When it asks whether to continue, choose yes
4. The fix has been applied!
IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF YOUR WINDOWS TYPE
If you are running Windows XP or older, there is a 99% probability that you are running a 32-bit OS. In case you're running Windows Vista or newer, you might have a 64-bit version. To find out, click start and then right-click on computer and choose properties. In the window that appears, look for system type and from there you should be able to find out which type you are running.
In the event that you still aren't successful in figuring out if it's 32-bit or 64-bit, it is more likely that you are running 32-bit so start off by installing the fix for it. If it turns out it isn't working, well then there's just one option left, that is you're running a 64-bit version of Windows. There shouldn't be any harm done if you end up installing the wrong fix at first.
If you still can't figure it out then I suggest you just run the game in windowed mode to take your screenshots.

Does this work in Windows 10? I installed the 64 bit version on my 64 bit machine and when running the game I hit prt sc key and nothing happens. I even restarted the computer and tried... nothing. Tried ctrl/prt sc and alt/prt sc too and nothing.

OK, it does work. It is just I couldn't find the screenshots in my pictures folder but I found them in a dropbox folder. I must have set it top work that way awhile ago and forgot about it. All is well.

Please, include this into a readme, the game guide, or let WW2GameOptions.exe turn it on upon request.

If you want a screenshot in Windows 10 use print screen. It has nothing to do with the game. It’s part of Windows.

I have Windows XP and do use PrintScreen to make screenshots, but they come out with terribly distorted colors without the EnablePrintScreen registry setting. It is as pertinent to the game as the recommendation to use the native LCD resolution and therefore worth mention in the documentation.

Window 10 has a little ap called 'snipping tool'. It works for me.

Alternatively, Ctrl-PrtScn and paste to paint.

There is a free screenshot software, named Greenshot (first result in google search), that I've been introduced to when I was working as a software tester a long time ago. I still use it for its precision. In its default settings, hitting PrtScr (default key but you can change it if you prefer) will freeze the screen at that point and a pointer will appear for you to select the area like windows snipping tool. Some (but not all of them) advantages over snipping tools are:
1. ability to put that capture straight to an inbuilt editor to draw and type on it.
2. you can capture full screen with Ctrl + PrtScr (by default)
3. you can capture only active window with Alt + PrtScr
4 it can remember the last region you capture so you can repeat capture of that area by Shift + PrtScr
5. And you can put a filename pattern formula so that you screenshots are saved automatically with file names that will make sense to you.
And many more other options. And it works with WinSPWW2 without any issue. Just in case someone was looking for a little more convenience in their screen captures.

I do all of my screenshots by pressing PrtScn on my MS keyboard then start up Paint Shop Pro ( my goto editor for everything I do graphically ) and then press "Paste as New Image" and it gives me a perfect copy of my screen no matter if I have the game running or not.

I use Greenshot exclusively for all my screen shots.
