View Full Version : patch failing to apply?

Hi. I have been out of circulation for a while. My installed game is version 3.24. I downloaded the 3.26 patch from the shrapnel games dom3 page. I ran it, it seemed to work, but after I started dom3 it still shows 3.24 as the version and when I try to open a .trn file from llamaserver it dies with an error message about being the wrong version.

When the patch runs, it only updates army11.something and a few map files.

Any ideas on what is happening? Do I need to find the 3.24->3.25 patch first and apply that?

That sounds like something is wrong. What size is your patch file? It should be 6,93 MB (7 275 577 bytes) with size on disk showing 6,94 MB (7 278 592 bytes) on NTFS.

If it doesn't match that, try downloading it again. If you do have that, we may need to look into it more closely. I haven't heard that anyone else would have had any problems with the patch.

Yes, that appears to be what I have.

Size: 6.93 MB (7,275,577 bytes)
Size on disk: 6.94 MB (7,278,592 bytes)

This is on Windows XP

The "dom3 -c" application (which I presume is 3.24) has

Size: 4.23 MB (4,440,064 bytes)

I suppose I could just deinstall everything and reinstall from scratch. Luckily, I appear to still have my Dom3 CD and manual. Kind of a PITA but unless someone has a brilliant suggestion I guess I will do that.

I reinstalled from scratch, applied the patch, and it works now. Thanks.

When I try to patch up to 3.27, I always get the following message:

dom3.exe: error - cannot replace, denied access

What I've tried so far:
* Re-installing, several times
* Tried different installation folder
* Tried different destination harddrive
* Running the patch file as administrator
* Disabling my anti-virus software

I get the same error message with the 3.26 patch, but the 3.24 patch does install correctly. The game always hangs after the first turn in v. 3.24 though... :doh:

My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, if that helps.

Is there anything else I can try? I'm dying to try the game, this is the first Dominions game that I've bought.

Try copying your folder to your desktop, applying the patch there and copying the folder back to program files.

That sounded like a great workaround, but it didn't work. It's the same error message again. Thanks anyway...

The error reports "dom3.exe cannot be replaced"... so rename the file then try again.

Weird, I am using the same OS as you and had no problems...

You may try going to control panel, system and security, action center, change user account control settings and turn UAC completely off. Then log off and back on (or reboot), then try applying the patch. Then turn UAC back on.

The only way to solve this might be that someone would upload the patched dom3.exe to an online file storing site, like RapidShare. After all, the only file the patch fails to update is the dom3.exe file. I'd then download the file and manually replace the file in the installation folder. But then again, would copyright be an issue in that solution? :confused:

I think the suggestion from either foodstamp or myself must have worked because the OP hasn't responded.

aaminoff uploaded the file for me, so I don't need any more help with my problem, thank you. The game started up fine, hope I don't encounter the end turn hang problem anymore.

Nope, the next turn generation still hangs. :( It got to a point where it said 'Resolving Battle (turn 1)', or something along those lines, but nothing after that. It probably enters an infinite loop. I have to forcibly close the application through the task manager processes. How long does it take to generate the next turn, usually?

This is good advice! :)

Actually, I had forgotten to turn off my compability setting (Win XP, SP3) for dom3.exe. I also updated my directx and my graphics drivers, so any of those three made the difference, the game works brilliantly now. And it's marvelous, best thing since Master of Magic! :shock:

I PMd Kestrel with a link to the patched exe. Did it work?

Great, glad you got it working kestrel, that sounded like a nightmare!
