View Full Version : MP "Relaxed Pace" Late Age Game

I came up with this idea simply because I want to play LA R'yleh, but I do not have time to commit full time to a game. However, I can handle a game with a reduced time commitment.
Host: llamaserver
Duration: I propose something like 24 hours for first 10 turns, 72 hours until turn 30, 1 turn per week after that.
I would like to limit the game to 6 players, with a map of only 10-12 provinces per player.
I have not worked out all of the settings, but I am considering easy research, stronger indies (9?), somewhat increased gem frequency. I am definitely open to suggestions.
Essentially, to accommodate the longer time for turns, I would like to speed things up to keep the game from dragging out.
CBM 1.6 since, if I understand correctly, it balances things a little better for a blitz-type game. Fixed version available here (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=11206&d=1309381457).
Diplomacy - not enforced. Be as honest or as dishonest as you want with regards to NAPs or similar agreements. Trade agreements are inviolable, however.
Post if you are interested.
Nations are first come, first served. I am taking R'yleh.
Make any suggestions for settings that you think would make this work better.

Ossya, on llamaserver's map and mod browser, looks like it might be a good choice. It is the right size, and the sea is not right in the middle of everything. There are not a whole lot of maps of the appropriate size, so the other option would probably be to try to get a random map that looks good.
tratorix
June 30th, 2011, 02:51 PM
Map looks good, though it will force you to compete on land fairly quickly. But if you're ok with it it should be fine. I'd recommend setting indies around 7, 9 seems a bit too high.

Indies 7 sounds good.
That is a good point about checking for fair starts. Of course, fixed starts means you can figure out where all the capitals are, even if you do not know who is located at which one.
I think I will play with the map generator this weekend and see if I can come up with something.
I have some vacation plans coming up. I am taking two days next week,July 5 and 6, but I think I can work around those since it does not take long to take a turn this early. I also have a few days the following week. I will have to see what happens then.

A scene, similar to this one, occurs in the capital of all land nations. In a public square, there is an old man, with wild, disheveled hair and eyes that stare off in the distance. He smells of the sea. His body in constant motion, twitching and jerking. He raises his arms and calls out in a loud voice.
"It is time! The half-moon is in the bowl. Look behind you. The cows are not what they seem. They come from the corners. Don't let them see you! Don't let them see you!"
He becomes more frantic, and his words turn to gibberish. From the cord he wears as a belt, he draws a knife and raises is it above his head. He brings it down with a quick move, then falls to the ground, silent. A crimson puddle spreads from below his neck. A lone sea gull perches on his head, plucks out one eye, then flies off in the direction of the sea.

The people of Man are greatly disturbed by the ill omen perceived just in front of the gates to the Towers of Chelms. They turn to the magisters for consolation and guidance. But the gates remain shut, the Magisters of the Towers stay silent.
In these hours of great fear the people remember their old ways and send a delegation to the ancient and once sacred Woods of Avalon. Lead by Arthur, the captain of the Castellans of the Towers, the group enters the great heritage of the old faith to seek in the past for answers to the questions of today.

Arthur has changed. as he returns from the sacred Forest. He was a well respected, even admired commander before. But now he literally radiates devine power and authority. He is as much as worshipped by his fellow comrades. Then he approaches the crowdbefore the towers:
"Fear not! A new age has dawned. And it will be an age of hardship and great strife. But it will also be an age of great honor and achievement. In the Forest I was given a vision by Taliesin, the Merlin. The sleeping god of our people. The master of all magics and soon to be ruler of this world. The Great one named me his Prophet and bid me to do his willing. We are to spread his Dominion far and wide to prepare for his return. But he also warned me. There will be others to claim godhood. Don't show mercy to their followers, he told me. Hunt them down and squash them, wherever you find them. For he is the only god there is to be!"
The large crowd of people hail the new prophet, when at last, the gates of the towers open. The towerguard marches forth and seizes the self proclaimed prophet without any resistance.
The crowd is stunned, and remains so for several hours. Just as they get restless a balcony door of the towers open, and the Archbishop himself emerges.
"Hear what I have to say! Arthur was brought before the congregation of bishops. We heard him through and we tested him. And in the end we found that every word he told was true. He IS the Prophet of our God Taliesin. And he will lead our armies to victory over all unbelievers and enemies of the Merlin. So all hail Arthur, the Prophet of Taliesin!"
With great cheer from the crowd Arthur enters the balcony to behold his new followers. And a new age for the people of Man and the whole world has dawned

The most recent turn had a hosting error. As a result, llamaserver sent a turn where everyone has staled. I have the option of rolling back and allowing everyone to submit a new turn or just continuing with the stales.
My preferred option, unless there is a strong objection, is to continue with things as they are. It means everyone loses a turn of recruiting and movement, but everyone also has an extra turn of income and research. Rolling back introduces the risk of more errors.

Okay, so now this is some super-strange thing. There was a battle in Holburg this round with Mictlan. In the battle replay, I scatter and rout his army. However, in the results, I am listed as "beaten by a stronger force", and the province now belongs to Mictlan. How is that even possible? If there was a reinforcing enemy army, should not it move in BEFORE the fight? I have no other replay than the one I decisively win. Can Mictlan comment and explain?
If not, I protest and call for an arbitrage from the admin.

The battle report is what actually happened, you hit the replay bug. It sometimes causes the battle replay to show something completely different from what happened.

Here (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=47478&highlight=replay) is a thread on the subject. It appears that it has something to do with different random numbers in the replay, though the exact cause it not known. Mods are only one possibility.

I'm not even sure how I would make a video of the battle and I'm not really seeing why I should since it's a well known bug. The troops didn't rout because I moved two priests from an adjacent province into the province where the battle took place. They were scripted to bless, so the jaguar warriors beat your troops.

I don't really care if it's "understood" or not, it should not happen. Under normal circumstances, I should see a proper replay of what happened in that battle. Information is quite important in this game. I see your priests, and they cast bless, but they are quickly overrun by my cav, resulting in mass rout.
If you don't "see" why you should, than there is something wrong with your sense of fair play. I am entitled to have this information under fair condition and to comenpensate this unfortunate bug, you should make every effort to bring the situation to the normal, fair state. As to the means of how, you can use Fraps, for example. Please postpone until I obtain this material.

It's not anyone heres responsibility to fix a bug in the game Kamamura. Any information, such as unit stats, blesses, etc. that are in the video are correct. It simply doesn't match the actual events due to a bug.

Anyway, I see that there is little time, so I submitted my turn. The game however seems to be broken in more ways, since in one of the battles, my Jigami safely fled the field, yet it's nowhere to be found. My theory is that the old 1.6 CBM mod is not compatible with the latest patch (at least I did not heard about a new updated version). I suspect the replays are not accurate at all.
As it is of little interest for me to play a broken game, I withdraw/surrender (take your pick). Find a replacement, or make me computer controlled, I don't really care. Bye.

Okay, I think I owe everyone here an apology. I was indeed running an obsolete version of CBM 1.6. I considered that improbable, because I am using several computers with different OSs (Windows and Linux), but then I remembered I just installed the same version on all of them.
As wonderloss correctly stated, the problem was indeed in double attacks, specifically my Samurai Cavalry had listed "Katana, Katana, Hoof" instead of "Lance, Katana, Hoof". I thought the two attacks are correct as a compensation for higher cost of that unit, and that's why I went crazy hiring them. Naturally, I was disappointed to see my investment not paying off - I thought my version is the correct, and yours broken. Obviously, the lance counts only on the first impact, but the two katana strikes would make the unit a killer.
Even today, when I looked at the last replay, I saw my cav massacre everything and even slay the Mictlan God, while in the correct replay I saw just now, I saw that the Rain God narrowly escaped.
With that resolved, I think I will last to the end, whatever it may be (though I presume it will end up with Rylegh victory, with the map being all that nicely custom-made and conveniently water-centric, hehe).
So, with that after us, how about some diplomacy? What about everyone against Rylegh? ;-) I think he is the biggest threat anyhow, and he will pick us one by one while we fight.
P.S.: Sorry for not replying, I was indeed not reading this thread. I got very angry, because I came to a conclussion that my justified complaint is being ignored. I have a policy not to read/write anything when angry, because it quickly comes down to insults and personal attacks, and nothing good ever comes out of that.

Well, since R'lyeh is all around me, I see things exactly like you. I desperately try to maintain my Dominion and live in constant fear of being attacked broadside by hordes of chaff. The problem is I don't see any means to strike back into the water. I don't want a war with anyone else, but even so I don't see a chance to stand my ground 1on1 against R'lyeh. So my strategy for the moment is build up and wait. I don't think I could be in an offensive alliance aginst R'lyeh.

I haven't had any replies to my post looking for subs. I'm going to post within each of my games, as perhaps some of you would like to babysit my nation in my other games, and perhaps someone there would come baby-sit for this one.
I've got three games I need subs for, starting a week from now (evening of the 19th would be ideal), and lasting until the 27th, when I return from camping.
There's DawnoftheMorning. This one is the most involved, and the one I most need a sub for! Playing as EA Caelum, no mods. Doing decently well, entering into late game.
There's LazyDays. (This game!). I really just need a babysitter to recruit mages :P
There's Nations, where I'm playing MA Ulm. This one is a bit of a crazy game due to a custom mod with a lot of changes (CBM 1.6, magic capped at 6th level, no indies, and some others). I understand that another mod package can be a pain, but you do get to check out the map, which I crafted :)
If anyone can take over one or more of these games a week from now, send me a PM.

For months, the oceans had remained calm. Many land dwellers kept a watchful eye on the ocean, remembering the earlier omen. In some of the lands on the coast, people had already begun to be illuminated, waiting for the arrival of the people of the stars.
After months of wariness, the seas in the south began to churn. Rising up from the depths came an army of mad or dreaming mermen and strange fish like men. Behind them were unrecognizable creatures not seen before. They were beings from the stars for whom the unenlightened citizens of man had no name.
Those who chose to take up arms were slaughtered. The following month, more armies followed. One was led by an ancient aboleth. These powerful beings had not been seen for generations, but this one rose from the deepest, most hidden parts of the ocean, lured by the new power. Another army came from the southwest, led by an illithid with the powers of the stars.
These armies began their march across the Nation of Man. Where temples to false gods were found, they were destroyed, so that they would not confuse the people or turn them away from true enlightenment. Thus the nation of R'yleh began to prepare the world for the arrival of the beings from the stars.

Guys, look at me, I'm Man!
"Rly'eh is the real threat here, we need to ally against him! I will accomplish this by attacking every land nation I share a border with!"
Consider me firmly on the squids side in this conflict.
Tratorix, please read your private message. I did not mean to attack you and was really shocked when I received the turn report. Perhaps I am just to stupid for this game.
First time I unintentionally attacked it was with spies who had still unstealthy troops with them.
This time I just wanted to switch some spies around and moved the similar looking mercenary commander to your province instead of the spy.
All I can say is I am really sorry, and I am ready to compensate you with money or gems or both. I don't want war with you, that would be totally crazy.
So I withdraw at once and again offer you compensation. Just name your price, and if its halfway reasonable and I can afford it, I will pay it this turn.

Olm - if he attacked, then he probably attacked on purpose. There are no accidents in this game. Since declaration of war is not mandatory, the temptation is sometimes too strong. The only thing you can do about it is what I had to do with Mictlan - hit back so hard he will regret he ever started it. Only when you are perceived as strong enough threat, people will be willing to negotiate, otherwise they will just roll over you.

From what I see, Mictlan is not in much of a position to negotiate.

No, I attacked him. And it was an accident. Probably my last. Just too silly!
Well I will fight R'lyeh as long as possible and give you my remaining property in the end, to continue the fight.

I would be happy to claim the deed for myself, but in fact the world has to thank Bogus the Troll for salvation from this beast.
So all hail Bogus Wormslayer!
And after hailing him for a month or so, I need to find means to get rid of him, for he besieges my home castle.
And if one beast was not enough, my valiant Wardens, assisted by some magnificent Pegasus Riders have killed Auluudh, the ancient Aboleth and his Army.
Now its only the Vastness with its retinue of greater Othernesses that bother my realm. They managed to evade my Wardens and rather let the Aboleth die in my attack. But I will come to them in time!

Bogus really can claim a single-handed victory there. The others routed quickly, but Bogus' life drain really did the trick for him.

Yes, N'Goo had just one strike left, when he reached Bogus. After that he passed out and the troll just hacked away at an unconscious wyrm.
Perhaps he would even have gotten away with a draw, had he passed out earlier, because Bogus killed the chaff rather slowly.
By the way: The last attempt of Mictlan to break free was also interesting to behold. For a moment I thought he might succeed.
It was a really interesting month indeed!

I have regained most of my territory with some minor battles against the mad ones. Still I feel like being worn down slowly. R'lyeh avoids my main force, harassing my stretched borders with his quite potent forces. He must have nearly 10 vastnesses now, ready to strike at my coastlines.
So if anyone is willing to help against the menace R'lyeh is, now would be a good time. The demise of Mictlan should make some resources available. And I would be very grateful if someone could liberate my castle in Cimri or even attack the western sea. R'lyeh is split at the moment and their god is dead. So when could be a better time to hit them, than now?

I have not been staling, but quite a few of my recent turns have been thrown together in a less than 10 minutes. I am in the process of moving, cleaning, and unpacking, which has cut into my free time even more.

Its a bit sad, that my first MP game ends like that, I think it would have deserved a proper winner.
Well before everyone looses interest, I want to give a very short AAR of Man's failure:
Its been a long time since, and I cannot remember everything, but I'll do my best.
I chose a sleeping rainbow pretender with good Order and Growth.
My starting point was 8. A good defensible position, but unfortunately only against land nations.
The game started out very (very, very) poorly. I lost my Prophet in the first fight to a stray arrow from some horsetribe cavallery. Half of my starting army also perished.
I tried a dozen similar fights in testgames, loosing none, often winning without loosing one unit! But here it was a total loss.
So I has a slow start and soon found out that R'lyeh was my neighbor to the east. So no Pretender, no Prophet and R'lyeh spreading his deadly Dominion with probably dom 10.
I had to put much more money in temples and priests, than I wanted.
Going north I found an Inkpod End in the woods :-(
When I arrived at the cruciual province 24 R'lyeh had already crossed it with his Worm into the western sea, so now it was R'lyeh Dominion from two sides.
At some time the Worm (unequipped) attacked me, but it turned out longbowmen are great against him and he fled.
I had to cut through 24, otherwise the game would have been over then.
I managed to do it, and after some dispute with Ulm I managed to establish something of a defensible position with 24, 29, 31, 37 and 44. Even with building many temples and priests I had enough money to build quite some forts, so the position was not bad.
Then I attacked 49, as nobody else took it.
I got greedy as I saw the nation north of there (don't remember which it was) being very weak and hard pressed by Jomon, so I marched northward. That was the biggest mistake. I managed to capture some provinces with minimal losses, but just when my army reached the northern end of the map, R'lyeh attacked in the south.
My army started to march south, but was months away.
Bogus came to my help, killing the R'lyeh worm, who was sieging my home
, but it did not help much.
Perhaps I could have had a chance, as yeh had also other enemies, but I had annoyed Ulm with my nooby mistakes (using scouts to ferry troops and then "sneak" them into his territory without unloading the troops. That happened twice. And once I just confused the images of a scout and my mercenary commander). I can not blame him. I was annoying and weak. So he attacked me and split my nation. From the on it was dying a slow death. I had some minor victories but I went down fast.
In the end, after my Pretender died in sight of the Towers of Chelms, I gave everything to Jomon to continue the fight against Ulm and R'lyeh (which he did splendidly, as long as I was able to observe) and pestered Ulm with two Lord Wardens and a mercenary band. I managed to take 2-3 provinces from him and that was what was left of Mans hopes when the last white candle died.
As mentioned previously I had fun, although I must admit I like the MA much more and fighting R'lyeh is a pain.
If its worth for anything: I'd vote for Jomon as winner.
CU in other games.
