I'm sure I've seen this before, but can't remember where...
I had ten blood slaves left in a province after the leader retreated, how do I change the blood slave units back into a blood slave gems?

Get a blood hunter in the province. And use the blood hunt command. You will not get the exact same slaves. :D

Which, translated to plain English, means that you don't. Orphaned bloodslaves stay as units and can't be turned back into pocketable bloodslaves.

That said, they can still be used for blood magic on the field. I just tested this.

If a leader retreats on the battlefield all the blood slaves die and are lost.

Not if the battle is won. At least in some cases the slaves survive as units.
There's no way to turn them back into normal blood slaves. It's possible that blood mages will use them if they're brought back onto the battlefield.

Give them gift of reason + a sanguine dowsing rod = Cruelty Win!

That is possibly the biggest waste of gems I have ever seen. Yet, doing just this, and empowering them in blood magic seems to have so much entertainment potential.

When they survive and return as actual units it's a bug and a rare bug.

That is awesome! Thanks for sharing.

This actually makes a lot of blood mages even more awesome. Just script them to cast the spells you want, and have the other commanders ferry in the slaves. If you can guess which province your enemy will attack, this allows you to trade provinces for casting life for a life spells. Script mages to life for a life/retreat (in cbm, a b2 mage with 2 slaves can cast it). And most SC's think twice about attacking you.

Life for a life is good at dealing with SCs, but its not great. Particularly compared to just sending people off to Inferno or Cocytus, which they don't even get to resist.
