View Full Version : Wishlist Can we get a 'Mods' sub-forum?

There are a lot of very nice mods around, but finding them can be a bit of a challenge.

It would be very useful if we could get a separate subforum where all mods could be collected and where modders could discuss mod-specific issues.

This would of course be a useful addition to the MBT forum as well.

I think this might be a good idea too. If someone has time of course.

I haven't been active on this forum in years, but if it had this sort of one-stop shop for mods, I'd check in much more often. So yea, definitely a good idea.

Sounds like a grand idea to me, I concur with Seabolt on this matter. Thanks for the heads up, Simon.

I can think of several good things that could come out of having a mods sub-forum. I can't think of a reason not to have one.

The best idea I've heard on this forum for some time.

Don/Andy is this something we might be able to get?

Seabolt makes a good point, that having an centralized spot for mods is a great way of drawing traffic to the forums. People are always keen to see if there are any cool icons, sounds, etc, but right now that kind of stuff is spread all over shop, and not easy to find.
In fact, it almost seems easier to find WinSP mods on other sites than on this main one. I'm not sure that such fragmentation of resources is entirely a good thing, and can't help but think that it could be avoided if there were a central sub-forum here, to showcase and organize modders efforts.

Having a separate forum on this site would also make it easier for you guys to provide expert guidance, and also tips to help modders avoid making changes that might conflict with any of your future updates.

What do you guys think?
Or perhaps such requests need to be made directly to the Shrapnel forum admins?

Maybe there'll be lots of difficulties addressing reported bugs to the developers if the game is heavily modded. Moreover patching etc will be more difficult to observe once it starts to deviate from the standard vanilla. I guess Don and Andy will just take a safe stance here. Also consider this game uses spaghetti codes that's somehow quirky even at normal state (even by the devs themselves).

I am not contra to mod, although I'm also quite content with the stock game.

Absolutely true.
In fact this is one of the major reasons in favor of having a mods sub forum here.
Modding is going to happen in any case, but right now its all over the place.
Hell, its easier to find WW2 and MBT mods on the Matrix site than it is here!

I totally agree that it would be a bad thing for mods to develop that would conflict with ugrades to the stock game.
That's why I think that having an organized spot here, where Don and Andy can more easily assist modders in producing cool additions that won't interfere with future patches, is such a good idea.

The "vanilla games" are actually (ten plus year in development) MODs of Steel Panthers 2.

A new sub forum for mods has now been posted for both games

Thanks Don!
A good healthy mod section can be a huge traffic generator, not to mention that lots of cool options make it much easier to draw one's friends into the SP cult.:D

I wonder if there is any way we could move some of the older threads for stuff like Cross's sounds, and the different infantry icons, and such, into the new areas?
Having all the goodies in one basket would make it easier for new fellas to grab.

Anyone who has posted mods in the past is free to repost them to the new sub forum.

Thanks a million Don! I read your post on the new sub-forum but am still wondering if this would be the right place to post icons too or should I keep using the TO&E section if they are not part of an .SHP file?

Hmm - reading sentence #1 of the sticky posted in the mods forum (my bold added):

This sub forum is intended for use by players who have created game / graphic / OOB mods for winSPWW2.
