View Full Version : MP Tiny Cataclysm - Tratorix Winner !!

Bullock
October 11th, 2011, 05:09 PM
I want to do a small & fast paced game to give a try to the mod Cataclysm:
http://z7.invisionfree.com/Dom3mods/index.php?showtopic=573

Basics : Everyone start with the same poor nation with H1 and mage 1x.
But most of indies lands have some magic sites (already up, no need to site search) who spawns some random indis (troops mages commanders...)

About the settings tell me your wish !
Atm i have in mind to set indi7, easy research and others settings to default.

Players 4-6
map : Streamlands
Turn length 36h
Others mods : CBM 1.92 / Streamers&standards.

Nation colors:

Bullock - Black
Tratorix - Pink
Dojango - Grey
Horrorfend - Green
Groundworm - Cyan
jimbojones1971 - Red

Wouldn't set indies to any higher than 7, could make expansion even more painful than it will already be. I'll join as the Commonwealth of Pink.

Edit: Also your link doesn't work.

Bullock
October 11th, 2011, 06:25 PM
Link corrected !

Indi7 sounds good to me.
But as mentioned i m listening any suggestion of settings.
Easy research maybe on a small map ?

tratorix
October 11th, 2011, 06:39 PM
Easy research sounds good, since we'll have to adapt research goals on the fly. Small map is probably ideal because I can see someone getting lucky with recruitment sights and just steamrolling everyone anyway. I just started a test game and the first province I took allowed me to recruit Bogarus' cap only mages.

Bullock
October 11th, 2011, 06:42 PM
Yeah i don't think we are going to play a balanced game :)
But i m sure it will be a fun one !

I have attached a map as a suggestion in the first post. (FirstWorld)
And it s in the case we get 6 players.

It is a shame I don't have the time for one more game :(.

I'm playing with this mod in Cataclysm, and it's really cool.

I didn't try a long time in SP but i think it take some time to manage all these indis in mid-late game, so i won't try to convince you.

But what i'm sure that it s going to be really cool :)

yeah, there's definitely a big element of randomness to the game, should be interesting to see how it turns out.

Sound like it will be quite a free for all, sign me up for the green nation.

Groundworm
October 13th, 2011, 12:17 AM
I'm definitely interested in this. Please put me in for the Caliphate of Cyan.

I took a look at the map you linked to- it's a no indies version. So while there are still the random sites generated by the Cataclysm mod, there are no other independent recruitables. I'd be in favor of changing to a map that didn't have this handicap. Might I suggest Six Lands or Streamlands instead? Perhaps Desert Eye?

Also, what do you think about changing research to standard?

Bullock
October 13th, 2011, 12:34 AM
Welcome in!

Didn't see it was no indi for my map, but it could be fun :) and i think i will stick to my choice for the votes :)
Otherwise i m fine with your maps except maybe Desert Eye which is a bit too big (120lands~) but i m fine with it anyway.

So actually we have those maps in competition, feel free to make some suggestions :

First land (no indi)
Six Lands
Streamlands
Desert Eye

And concerning research my vote will depend of the size of the map we choose. I'd rather pick Easy R. but i'm fine with standard.

Groundworm
October 13th, 2011, 01:44 AM
One other thing about the First Land map: in addition to being no indies, it's also a dead seas version (water provinces have no income, no resources, and no chance at having recruitable units). Also, it seems as though the Cataclysm nations can't be selected with Six Lands, so that's clearly not a good choice either. If Desert Eye is slightly larger than you're looking for, then my vote is for Streamlands.

tratorix
October 13th, 2011, 01:48 AM
Streamlands is fine with me, still want easy research.

jimbojones1971
October 13th, 2011, 08:33 AM
Any chance you can fit in one more? If so, I'd be very keen. Happy to play pretty much any colour (as they are all basically the same).

Bullock
October 13th, 2011, 12:15 PM
It s fine Jimbo. Actually you get the last slot.

So we are about to start with indi7 easy research & Streamlands.

You can still ask for specific settings or vote for a proposed settings in the previous posts.

The game is created : http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=Tiny_Cataclysm

I had to change the name of the game because there is already 1 called Cataclysm.

Gentlemen, get your pretenders ready !

Groundworm
October 13th, 2011, 02:01 PM
The game on llamaserver is middle age. In order to use the Cataclysm mod, it needs to be early age.

Bullock
October 13th, 2011, 02:03 PM
thx. I ve updated the game.

Bullock
October 14th, 2011, 03:22 AM
Ok the game is ready to start as soon as Jimbo send his pretender.
If you want some specific settings its the last time to ask for them.

jimbojones1971

Excellent, will get my pretender in when I am home in about 6 hours. :-)

jimbojones1971
October 14th, 2011, 09:23 AM
So I've got the following mods turned on when I make my pretender, I assume that this is correct based on the first post:
* CBM 1.92
* Cataclysm
* Streamers and Standards (Llamas version)

Well, found that province (its in normal games too, not just cataclysm) that is defended by three air mages well stocked with air gems - orb lightning madness!

I am pleased to say though that, through a combination of using sermon of courage to get my heavy infantry to fight to the death, and mass archer fire plus some judicious smiting from my prophet, we were able to prevail. Having said that, of the 27 heavy infantry that went into the fight ... one survived. (The archers got a much better deal of it, not even one got wounded much less died.)

So I have made the surviving unit of heavy infantrymen into our royal guard, and deployed them back to the capital where they can spend their remaining years being feted for their bravery and fed peeled grapes by semi-naked female (or male - we are an open minded people!) admirers.

Which ones? Both the light infantry and heavy infantry are called heavy on the recruiting screen. I seem to have an acceptable attrition rate on the true heavies.

Bullock

Why the hell my stupid lonely commander has to follow my cavalry and die ...
Why doesn't he stand peaceful at the rear of the field and wait the job to be done... ?

Aaaah damn bunglers...

The "light" heavy infantry are just dead men walking. The other ones are doing OK, but I find that my typical battle ends with the few surviving heavies fleeing the field while my ranged guys mow down the enemy and win the day with contemptuous ease.

Found a bugged site. Shambler City. Scout's honor, I won't recruit any of those free Wild Ettins (0 gold, 1 resource). If anyone else sees one of those sites, I guess we'll have to have a gentlemen's agreement not to take advantage?

It's not game-breaking, the units aren't mega-overpowered or anything, but they're free, which is probably not working as intended.

October 20th, 2011, 09:53 PM

Yeah, agreed dojango. At the end, we can bundle them all up and stick them on the mod thread for fixing.

How are people finding the mod so far, out of interest? I'm quite enjoying it, as it is very different, but I really am very confused about how well I am actually doing in the game.

tratorix

The Wild Ettin site is actually a CBM bug IIRC. Quite liking this mod, every turn feels like Christmas morning. :D

Groundworm
October 21st, 2011, 02:41 AM
I agree... each new turn I can't wait to see what's waiting for me to be recruited in my new provinces. :)

The indie strength 7 and only heavy infantry/cavalry and archers has made expanding more difficult than I'm accustomed to. That may be part of your troubles, jimbojones, rather than the mod itself.

I too enjoy coming across some unexpected new recruits. Although I would be interested in knowing how many provinces people have come across without any special sites, should I feel disheartened that I've found 5 already?

Bullock
October 21st, 2011, 10:38 PM
No don't worry i didn't found many either.
Maybe 2 sites for every 5 lands.
When i tried in SP i had something more like 2 for 3 lands.

jimbojones1971

jimbojones1971
October 22nd, 2011, 06:30 PM
When I saw that a province had heavy infantry, archers and elephants it didn't occur to me that it would have SIXTEEN ELEPHANTS and that they would ALL fight to the death instead of routing and stampeding over their own units.

Fortunately by brave infantry all fought to the death again (with the exception, curiously, of the last survivor, now designated as the "Royal Guard" unit). But seriously - sixteen elephants?

All part of the fun, though - this mod remains very entertaining :-)

News flash: Red wins battle. National Day of Shame declared.

In breaking news, our on the spot journalist can confirm that Red has won a battle. This appears to be the result of a misunderstanding between the units in question and high command, where the order "roll over and show your belly to the enemy to deter aggression" was mis-interpreted as "kill them them all!!".

We understand that orders have been issued for the units involved to dig a large hole and bury themselves alive, and that a national Day of Shame has been declared in response to this excessive display of competence.

Just watched the battle in Wyndun (#90), Bullock - that was one seriously a55-kicking SC you had there!

I noticed at some point - maybe after he got struck blind - that his morale dropped back down from 99 to 13, but I think he couldn't run away because my second Zmey was in the way?

I was a bit sad that you killed the other Zmey, but at least all the rest of my leaders made it through so hopefully I still have the ability to cause some additional damage before the inevitable!

Wow, I literally got that turn in by about 2 minutes. Phew!

Urburthe the Zmey (popularly known as the world's second best action hero, after Megethos Wormform) has asked me to write that he is sleeping well, totally untroubled by any Nightmares. In fact, the only problem he really has is that he is getting fat from eating too many Black PD guys.

Bullock, any chance you can get your guys to rub themselves with extra light olive oil and lemon before the next battle? I have heard it has slimming properties, and may help Urburthe overcome his overeating induced weight disorder.

December 11th, 2011, 04:53 AM
Sorry, bit of a long, ranty post- I'm very upset with myself over my terrible play, and this game has been a constant source of frustration to me.

I've beaten Black's armies and whittled his army size graph to next to nothing. I've killed large numbers of SCs, captured several artifacts, decimated his gem production, trashed his income, taken a decent amount of his territory, and contested his ability to wage war. All the while my income and gem production have grown and my territory has remained almost untouched by the war.

And yet, I'm still completely unable to defeat him. His (many) remaining SCs and raiders are still out taking back provinces that I capture- again and again. I can't catch his raiders to kill them, and when I do, they more often kill my forces. I've lost several battles and lost force cohesion in his territory. This turn, for the first turn in awhile, he actually managed to take back more territory than he lost.

I'm entirely unsure how I managed to do so well against you overall, Bullock, considering that I clearly have no idea what I'm doing. How am I supposed to beat your Zmeys and Ettins and Grendelkin and everything else? The only successful tactic I've used is Mind Hunting all of Black's raiders, at the cost of many many many astral pearls, and that's not cutting it.

Bullock
December 11th, 2011, 08:57 AM
Well actually you are kinda harsh with yourself.
First you are actually winning, which isn't that bad :)
and then i think it's harder to finish a guy because of his remaining raiders, like me with red and his early Zmeies i couldn't defeat.

When i proposed you peace i was expecting a better situation for me now than i'm actually.
Anyway as you said you have totally screwed my incomes so it will become easier and easier for you. But as i said our war has stand too long for the survivor to face properly pink after.

Btw even losing i m having much fun in this game :)

dojango
December 11th, 2011, 01:59 PM
yeah, part of the joy in losing is spitting in the winner's eye as you go down... trying to inflict as much damage on the victor as possible.

If you've taken his homelands, you could go for the domkill, also teleport/cloudtrapeze SC killers on his raiding SCs once you've seen their equipment and tactics (teleport/cloud trapeze goes before regular movement)

I don't think I'll need a pause for the holidays, but if you and Groundworm want one I don't mind.

Also, Groundworm, exactly how many astral pearls did you put into that stellar focus? The minimum 30 definitely wouldn't have dispelled my Well of Misery.

I don't need a pause for the holidays, but if you'd like to do that, Bullock, then I have no objection. I'll take turns as and when they come.

You're correct, tratorix. I had previously tried to cast Earth Blood Deep Well with somewhat more than the minimum number of earth gems required, and it failed. So this time, when I cast Stellar Focus, it was with significantly more than the minimum required. I need me having more gems, and you having fewer!

Besides, your well had made the world a miserable enough place already. :)

Also, recent turns have been taking me a very long time. Can we extend the turn timer to 48, perhaps even 72 hours?

Thanks.

Actually, at this point I don't think it much matters. I think Bullock is away for the holiday, which is why he didn't see my request for an extension and I staled for the 2nd turn in a row. By now, I've basically got nothing left.

I'm ready to declare tratorix the winner. I'm sorry I didn't put up a better fight.

I saw your request on my smartphone and changed the timer asap.
I didn't answered on the forum cause it s boring to type on the phone but a timer 60h was set

it s obvious to me that tratorix has won this game.
And he can thx Groundworm for that : =p

For the little story when i broke all nap at a time i was planning to go against Pink!

Too bad it turns that way we could have made a very nice 1v1v1 with a strong black pink and cyan.

However i had much fun in this game and i can fight to the end if you guys also want to. Or declare now trato Winner.
as u want
Cheers

You did extend the turn timer? Thank you. I guess I missed the turn deadline anyway.

It's been a good game. Black put up a hell of a fight and, indeed, the two of us fighting each other allowed Pink to gain the upper hand.

Bullock, I have to ask: if you were intending to fight Pink, why did you break NAPs with everyone else at the same time? Do you not see how threatening that was? When you broke your NAP with me and Gray, you had the most provinces, near-highest research, lots of forts, and (I think) biggest army. This was before Pink started getting up all of his globals. So you were the greatest power in my mind, and you were right on my border. I probably should have contacted you to find out what your intentions to me were, but I felt very threatened by you breaking all NAPs. So much so that I stopped a very successful war against Gray, gave him back his territories, and allied with him to fight you.

Yeah, in retrospect, it wasn't the smartest move, but that's why I did it.

We might as well call it, really. At this point I just have too big of a material advantage to lose, since I'm churning out at least 2 fully kitted Tartarians a turn, not to mention a ridiculous amount of mages and chaff. Honestly, Bullock did me two big favours in this game, one in drawing everyone's attention by canceling all his NAP's at once and another by refusing to die long enough for me to finish eating Green and Grey. GG all, was fun, hope to play you all again in a game where I don't catch a bunch of lucky breaks. ;)

I guess it s time to explain my previous decision.
I've broken all nap at the same time because all of you were already engaged in a war. By doing this way i was hoping, while you were all busy, not to be considered as a threat. Also, i was maybe a little overconfident... i had a lot of help in construction... Smith, both hammers and construction site ! i was constructing stuff for maybe 10% of the cost ;)

also at that time i was first in most charts which didn't help on the overconfident thing.
I was planning to go against Pink who had just casted several powerful globals, but Cyan and gray decide otherwise.
Several turns after i tried to make peace with Cyan, but he wasn't willing to let me have back my cap. From there the victory of Pink was obvious and here it is.

Anyway this game allowed me to make a lot of experience with items & Invoc from which i ve learned much.

Should i close this game ? or you want to run few more turns ?
Anyway i hope to see you in a future game (to take my reveeeenge muahaha

You had a construction site!? I knew you had the Dwarven Hammer and Hammer of the Forge Lord, but a construction site too? No wonder you were fielding so many artifacts even after I crippled your gem production!

I'm fine with ending the game here- I agree that tratorix is the clear winner. I learned a great deal fighting against Bullock about what works and what doesn't, how to fight against SCs and thugs, and the importance of forts. I still have a lot to learn about how to field SCs of my own, but it was a good game and I improved my play somewhat.

Thanks for the game. :)

Yeah, might as well end it. No point in dragging out hour long turns when it's pretty much a forgone conclusion. Well fought guys.
