Ground Surveillance Radars (GSR) Vision 50+
Do(GSR)have a special movement detection ability or simply have a chance to see beyond 40 hex?
If no ability, is it possible to increase spotting chance for (GSR) units?
We used to spot leg infantry up to 5km+ depending on terrain/weather with MSTAR!
I no longer select units with GSR capability ie.LAV Coyote OOB 30 because I found no extra ability in spoting moving units to substantiate the high cost.
Thanks in advance!!

GSR is just another version of TI in the game. i.e. A Night Vision system that can see through smoke (vision 40+).
The game has no differentiation in night vision beyond that, other than TI being able to spot infantry a little better at ~500m and less at night. (When using the system at ranges greater than current unaided vision rating - "visibility" in game terms).
No need to set up GSR and that it really only works on moving targets (uses the Doppler effect) and for ground mounts, must be stationary. No differentiation between active IR (which give out your position to passive IR detectors) and passive systems (which generally do not). No game treatment of the much-reduced fields of view of night vision gear.
Nor does the "visibility" of the game system differentiate between visibility reduction due to light (night) or weather (rain, fog, smoke).
It's just a simple system that fits with the company and battalion level of the game system, and also only needed the one byte for each unit's data, and one for the map data. Remember that the game originally was designed for the 386 and DOS 640K memory, with a limit of about 50 units a side back in 1995 or so.

I understand, got excited when I saw TI/GSR capability!!
I thought I'd ask if there was a way of improving this feature. The game has improved a lot since the first patches. You never know what kind of magic you can trick the game code to do!
Is there anything specific the SPMBT team is zeroing on to fine tune the game, ie.game play issues, OOB updates and/or game features?
Thanks Andy!!

What joy it was doing a campaign back then ... which 48 units did you want as part of your core! Had a hard time doing a mechanized company it it had any support weapons.

That's why you used to get a few good tanks and the rest the cheapest you could afford, so that you upgrade them whenever you could.
I still do something similar some times, not for the same reason of course lol.

It wasn't really the cost I was referring to but the unit limit.
Did you dare skimp on AA? Artillery? Transport?

I simply don't remember many things about how I used to play. Although I had the games and played, I mostly played Panzer General back then and a bit of Iron Cross (this one http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/iron-cross ) for my wargaming needs, the couple hours per week I had available per month. (I was a seaman at the time) IIRC I couldn't afford to buy everything I wanted and there was a unit limit at the start of the campaign, so I had to buy cheap "useless" units to fill the limit and replace them later on. At least, that's what I remember, unless I am mixing memories with Iron Cross lol.
Oh yeah also A line in the sand (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/a-line-in-the-sand ) but that was mostly before SP was released)

And this has precisely what to do with Ground Surveillance Radars (the topic of the thread, you know)...
Please keep threads reasonably on-topic, and if you have something different to talk about, feel free to start an appropriately titled new one.
Thanks.
Andy.
Who never drifts off-topic, ever. Much. Well, only now and then... :D

Yes that team is called Andy and Don :D and they even put up with our nagging about our pet peeves most of the time ;) And slap some with trout when necessary (I thought I was the only one still using mIRC), and never ever themselves drift off topic.
Anyway, back on topic. Seems like one of those things, like many of my pet peeves, that simply cannot be included in a game like this.
