Is there any way to make a lot of -1 water hexes at once, or are we restricted to making them one hex at a time?

They are edge hexes for lakes so if you use the area fill function you'll get lakes. So one at a time e.g. if you want to male a 1-hex wide canal.

It's been awhile since I played with the map editor but as I recall it's one at a time as it's not really something that usually is changed in large amounts.
It is possible with the extended map editor to cut a section of shallow water and paste it into deep water to create a type of reef that will prevent LC from passing but allow amphibs to cross
What is it you are trying to do ?

I'm trying to create a large, shallow bay at low tide with numerous cuts and inlets. The scenario I'm setting up will have ships, and I don't want them to be able to get too close to the shoreline. I also want people to accidentally run them aground in the shallow water.
Didn't think of the cut and paste in the extended version. That will probably be the solution.

It won't do exactly what you want but you should be able to prevent the ships from getting too close to the shoreline.

It's been a while since I tested it, but I seem to remember ships generally get stuck in shallow water hexes. I'll fire those test scenarios up again and give an update.
