I've played a number of battles where the Russian tank IS-1 seems to outperform The SU-152. This is puzzling because the SU-152 has a bigger gun. I fired a SU-152 from 3 hexes away at a German lightly armored vehicle, had direct hits but it was not destroyed. In general, I've gotten better results from the IS-1.
I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks

The answer seems to be is that I unknowingly chose SU-152s that only had HE rounds. Didn't know they came that way.

The SU-152 was basically a howitzer on a tank chassis. It was designed to provide close in arty support for infantry, not to fight tanks. That's why you only have HE rounds for it. It is really a powerful weapon if used correctly.

If you do a google search for SU-152s there are stories that claim that SU-152s were used in battles against German Tigers. One source claims that an SU-152 blew the turrets off Tigers in battle. I guess this is BS?

See my posting there re APCalc, (A useful utility we provide with the game), 152mm AP and tigers.
If you want AP from the SU-152 then buy the version with some AP ammo. If all you require is HE, then the all-HE loadout.

If you are playing 1946 scenarios, there is also available ISU-152 with seven HEAT rounds (penetration 18).
