Which artifacts are "must have"? Which are the best ones, utility-wise and in combat?

A good place to start is here: http://dom3.servegame.com/wiki/Artifact_Hints

its based on cbm 1.7 but for the most part still applies to newer versions, and mostly for vanilla too

2 mindhunts, and you lose a lot of gems :D.

You make a good point and it prompted me to do some more testing. The setup I mentioned will work if the bearer is killed in combat but not, it appears, outside of combat. Once again demonstrating why mind hunt is OP and non-S nations can never win. ;)

The twist is that if the armor of virtue wearer receives the ritual of returning tag then he'll be protected outside of combat as well and be safe even from mind hunts. I'm not sure if the tag is triggered by number of units involved in the combat or number of kills. Having a few dozen units on each side triggered it but having just a handful didn't seem to.

And since the ritual of returning tag stays even when the armor is removed it means you could hand the armor around and have multiple commanders with returning. :p

shouldnt the first mind hunt send the artifact bearer home? then the second mind hunt wouldnt target him. At least in theory

Torin, only if the bearer was in combat at least once already, then the ritual of returning is triggered.

There are quite a few very good artifacts, from kickass weapons like the Mage Bane, to the ridiculous gem savings from the Hammer of the Forge lord, to excellent boosters, to the awesomeness that is the Chalice.

But there really is nothing that comes even remotely close to the game-changing potential of the Gate Stone and the Boots of the Planes. Those two items just give you an unparallelled flexibility that can't be duplicated by anything else in the game, and I would gladly trade my soul for either of them.
