Is there a functional maximum to magic resistance?

I was expecting an other question when i saw the subject so i'll ask mine too :)
I noticed that almost no combat MR spell stack (none ? )
for instance iron will won't stack with antimagic.
So is it possible to have more than +4MR trough combat spell ?

I don't think there is a hardcoded maximum. (Although you might want to ask modders whether there is or not. I think most of the values below can be modded just fine, but don't quote me on it.)
The maximum you can achieve more or less 'normally' though would be: base 18* + lead shield (4) + starshine skullcap** (2) + armor of souls (5) + Antimagic Amulet (4) + any of the MR boosting spells (4) = 39 + being in a heavy drain dominion (2) = 41. On top of that pretenders get a bonus for being in their own dominion, but I can't remember offhand what the maximum is.
I think that covers all possible boosts. Of course, any setup like that would leave you quite weak to anything not involving MR.
* 18 is the 'normal' maximum base MR for the heavy hitters in the game. There are a couple of exeptions, (horrors for one) but they're really rare, and I'm not sure any of them have full slots.
EDIT: The Iron Angel (Ulm national summon) has base MR 20 and full slots.
** If you're cold blooded and want to craft an extremely expensive artifact you can wear the Jade Mask which gives you + 3 MR along with some other benefits. (Allthough, are there cold blooded units with base MR 18 who have full slots? Intresting quiz question... :smirk:)

I'm disappointed that the MR+ from S blessing is capped.

An Astral bless will stack BUT you have to cast the bless first, because it only buffs MR to a maximum of 18.

If you are willing to include artifacts then you could also use the Mage Bane sword for (+5) and replace the starshine cap with Amon Hotep (+5-2=3). Oh, and heavy drain dominion will never give you more than + 1 to MR at drain 2. That would put your MR at 48. And I think that a pretender gets 1 point of extra MR for every 2 candles for a maximum of +5. So if it is a pretender with full slots in dom 10 the maximum would be 53?
Not like it maters with Dominions RNG. One of the most bull**** battles I ever saw included a Wyrm with MR 28 die to a single casting of soulslay from a mage with no penetration boosters, on turn 1. The guy that had the Wyrm pretender went AI and seem to have left the dominions community shortly after that battle.:o

Damn, how could I forget the Mage Bane? (Amon Hotep I'm less worried about forgetting. ;) ) I did actually open up my manual and give a cursory glance at the artifact level item list to see if the capital letters MR jumped out at me in case I forgot something, but it seems that didn't help either.
Anyway, to get back to more real targets, I'm quite confident equiping my heavy duty SC's with Starshine Skullcap, Rainbow armor and Antimagic amulet + spell of choice when in battle for a MR of 31 (27 out of battle) even againt heavy S nations. Sure, occasionaly you might loose one to a lucky Soul Slay, but it's rare enough that there always will be an easier way to take them out, and that's about the best you can ask for in this game.

Frozen Heart is great VS any SC that is not cold immune. (Probably the most common immunity.) Though even if you are not immune you can probably get around it by scripting the SC to stay in the back for five turns and let the enemy come to him. Frozen heart is only range 15+5 per level of water.
