So I have some items hanging around at the lab. I randomly place Water Bracelets and Water Robes on minor 1 or 2 W level researchers. Their research point seems to go up by 1 for each item.
Why??
(Unless I'm talking rubbish, which is always possible...)

they got more skilled in magic. +1 research per skill point

Per skill point what/when/where? Any path? Because this is W? Has this always happened across any path and I have never noticed?? Manual page reference, plz? :)

All paths give +1 to the research value of a mage.
In fact, mage all get as research value some base score (2 or 3 I think) plus the total number of magic ranks (holy doesn't count however).
You can check by yourself when you have a mage with a 10% random path, the base research is one more than for other mage of the same type without the random path.
A few mages get a bonus to their research value (sages for exemple), while other get a malus (Dai oni are very poor for research despite having a great magical power).
Also, note that experience levels also slightly increase research for any mage.

Gosh, I had no idea.... p.85 "Indirect Magic" doesn't mention skill level == RP, which is where this would belong?
I have left booster stuff in lab each night when not needed, sounds like I should keep this stuff on my researchers from now on...

It's not skill level = RP, it's skill level + unit based constant = RP. Usually the unit based constant is 2-3, but occasionally you get something like a sage (I believe they have 10), and there are a few that are actually negative (The Chayot has something like -12).

I was not using "==" in a C++ sense! I meant "equates to", i.e. you get some RPs from your magic skill level (also, including boosters). It seems this was omitted from the manual :), Soyweiser's link above explains clearly.

From the manual (page 90) :
The higher a mage's magic skills, the more research points he or she will have.
OK, the formula isn't given, but it's pretty obvious if you look at a few mages with different #s of paths.

Some mages also have a hidden research malus.
