I have a use an assasin to attack a commander, will the defenders battle report show which nation/player was controlling the assassination attempt ?

Most of them do. There are a few spells that are anonymous. But, I think you can still determine the side using the debug functions. (But those do not work in mp games iirc, as only the hosting side gets the debug results).

I'd also note that use of national assassins makes the person responsible blatantly obvious.

also default naming... but you can turn that around and name your assassins as those of another nation...

I have 1 assassin unit, not commander, among my forces, somehow. Does anyone know how I have acquired him?

Iirc if you use assassins, you can always see which nation it is. Unless you use the spells. So renaming, isn't' that valuable.

OK, so...

Having established I have an assassin unit (from enslave mind), what shall I do with him?? Is he any use?

Stick it in an army, and see that it dies. That thing costs way too much upkeep.
