Do death sites like the Temple of Darkness, which allow the summoning of shadows and shades, become more effective if I put a more powerful death mage in it, or should I stick the cheapest one I can in that province?

AFAIK, it doesn't matter how powerful a mage you have performing the rituals. I usually have indie necromancers in there for me.

It doesn't matter, and they usually aren't worth it at all.

I usually have indie necromancers in there for me. I prefer revenants, summoned by said necromancers. After all, necromancers cost upkeep and can perform actual death magic (like shadow bolt, summon lammashtas, craft a skull staff, ETC).

Most of the time no, but the Temple of Darkness is worth sticking a revenant in. A couple of banefire archers per turn builds up over time if you're not in a hurry and they have a fairly outsized impact on the battlefield when properly used.

I found most sites not that bad. The one that gives you 5 ghouls each turn is nice because the ghouls keep up walls better than normal undead. And the shade/shadow one gives nice eth units. Not super in any way. But as you can easily summon a revenant it is almost free units. (And you only lose a revenant turn + one mage turn for each free unit spawning, a bargain).
