Looking for players with some MP experience. Doesn't have to be a lot, but this shouldn't be your first or second MP game.

settings:
Map: Realm of Roaring Rhinos
Players: 12
Mods: CBM 1.92
Era: late age
Indie strength: 7
Magic sites: 45
Hall of fame: 15
score graphs: off
all other settings default
banned nations: Ermor, R'lyeh
hosting: Llamaserver
30h turns until at least turn 30, will advance to 48h afterwards as needed
diplomacy is non-binding, gem/item/province trading remains inviolate

Please do not abandon the game or stale repeatedly without notifying me or posting- I'd much rather find a sub than have someone quit abruptly.

1) Groundworm- Marignon
2) Immaculate- Patala
3) Slobby- Gath
4) Carpetbagger- Pythium
5) Bat/man- Bogarus
6) Finalgenesis- Atlantis

Interesting that diplomacy is binding. Thats an increasingly unpopular option. Should be interesting how it changes the dynamic.

Welcome aboard. Immaculate, why is binding diplomacy becoming unpopular? Would you suggest less rigorous diplomacy?

Non-binding diplomacy certainly has it's place in the game, but I don't know if I'm a fan of securing a NAP with someone and not actually knowing if I have a NAP with them.

I am having a bit of second though on binding diplomacy. How is it enforced in not so rare cases of conflicting treaties the inevitable wars and such would bring?

Define conflicting treaties?

In general, people only really sign NAPs. Alliances, if any, are always temporary (and never written or binding in any way). You rarely see anything that may be considered, say, a mutual defense pact or somesuch (i.e. X attacks Y, Ys treaty with Z forces them to attack X), because there is only one winner at the end.

I suppose someone can try more zany treaty ideas (and go for things like a double victory), but in the overwhelming majority of cases, you don't see it. And things like gem/item trades are basically always honored, even in games where diplomacy isn't binding. Even in non-binding diplo games, the majority of treaties which are signed are generally maintained (due to the reputation cost of breaking them).

You might notice that even a simple NAP cannot be maintained trough the game as there "can be only one".

Well, that's why every NAP has an expiration clause (either it's timed to last only X amount of turns before being renewed, or, more popularly, there is a cancellation clause which requires X turn notice before the treaty is dissolved and attacks may commence).

I'm fine with binding diplomacy, in fact it would be fun to find an "honorouble" game.
but these kinds of games are rare - people are more used to cut throat.

Hi Groundworm, it's been half a year since my last MP game almost. I'd like to get my feet wet again, sign me up for Atlantis. I think you were arco in New Kinda noob way back when? Good times =)

I'm definitely newb, still in the 8~ games range and first time on 1.92. I hope I don't get rushed out too quickly!

For binding agreement, I highly recommend very clear and defined rules on it if we go ahead with it, otherwise it WILL go wrong. Let me provide a suggestion (which shed some light on where things can go wrong):

1) Only NAP X can be binding. X may be any non-negative, non-zero integer. For example, NAP using imaginary numbers will not be binding.(Yes this is a bad joke)

2) No last minute declaration (5 minutes before turn resolved), let's say a pm during first 6 hours for 24h turn and 12h for 48h turns will be considered valid, non-valid declaration will be considered valid starting on the next turn.

3) After declaration, 3 turns must occur counted as follows: Ex. NAP 3 - Turn 10 valid declaration made, Turn 11, Turn 12, Turn 13 battle may occur (orders can be given in turn 12)

4) All stealth units other then indie scouts caught will be considered breach of NAP (assassins, unrest generator ...etc are no no). Which leads into another problem, there is no repercussion for breach, in fact it seems like a freebie way to break NAP for war, there is no way to enforce the binding. You could say no stealth units in NAP mate territory period, but what can you do it you find them? End the game (another way to grief the game)?

5) Global spells will not be considered a breach of NAP, or do we want the restriction of not being allowed to cast certain global if you have NAP with anyone? The flip side of the coin is what if you are a long lived race and cast burden of time, while you have NAP 5 with most of your short lived rival?

6) Territory stealing is allowed because of how onerous obtaining proof is (you can't). Consider this example: Nation A is at war with nation B and have NAP 5 with Nation C. Every time Nation B takes a province from Nation A that it can't hold on (with say a ghost rider), Nation C would conveniently attack right after with a single scout to take it, and oddly Nation B doesn't say anything and their actions is in fact fully coordinated throughout, but Nation A cannot attack nation C immediately due to NAP 3, even though clearly Nation C is actively working with B to screw A over.

Basically, binding agreement can often be used as a sucker punching weapon that cause a lot of unhappy *****in', I've seen scenario 5 happen often, and scenario 6 in various variants a few times myself (all in non-binding games thankfully). You can abuse the hell out of binding agreement and cause a lot of grief unless you come up with a textbook sized rule list.

I'm fine either way, and despite the above I don't actually have a clear preference, but I've seen cases where if there was binding agreement it can go against it's original intention (a clean game) and turn it into a mess. So... since we're going binding agreement I'd like a set of very clear and precise rules =) doesn't mean I won't abuse any loopholes though (of which there will guaranteed to be some).

Whollaborg
April 27th, 2012, 03:29 AM
Perhaps this doesn't qualify as a "simple NAP" any more ;)

All right, Bat/man, you're in! Shall I put you down for Agartha or Bogarus?

Finalgenesis, I remember you! Great to play with you again! Welcome back! :)

The whole issue of binding vs. non-binding diplomacy seems to be contentious. I'm changing it to non-binding, with the caveat that most of the people I've played with have been more interested in having a good game that's won honorably. If someone does breach a NAP, feel free to call it out publicly so that it's noted for future reference. Things that constitute breaching a NAP include, among others: deliberately overwriting the same global, assassinating commanders, casting remote attack spells (hard to catch), etc. Trades of gems and items, as well as province swapping, are to be considered inviolate regardless.

I have no preference on the type of diplomacy, but a suggestion:

How about for diplomacy to be limited to ingame messaging and any breaches can be publicly announced if necessary (backed up by screenshots if warranted). This way you dont disadvantage those who dont spend so much time on the boards/irc or have arguments over timing of messages....

Excellent! Welcome, everyone!

shard: I've found that the actual communication method makes little difference. I've received communications in-game and by PMs on here, and they've worked equally well. And, for the most part, people seem to live by their word, and don't breach NAPs even with non-binding diplomacy. I'm assuming this will continue to not be an issue.

Nightfall: I forgot to mention that I would prefer no Ermor or R'lyeh, so I'll put you in as Ulm. :)

It is a new map for me as well.

I downloaded it and tried it out, it is very colorful. I am a lover of art but i think these colors might be a bit distracting. No sites means that they have removed all of the preset sites, so all sites are random.

I understand why we are going with a small map, large number of players but boy is this going to be and adjustment for me! This is all about early expansion which is what LA T'ien C'hi is not all about. About 11 provinces per player i think.

Groundworm

Renaming is on. Sorry if I forgot to mention that in my original post.

Bat/man- Shahrivar is a fairly open, non-wrap map with a small (12? province) lake in the middle west that is the only water on the map. It's colorful, as decourcy mentioned, and has decent resources, income, and terrain variety. The original map had fixed magic sites (some of which were quite powerful) that were unequally distributed and so gave certain starting spots disproportionate advantages. This version that we're using has them removed.

decourcy- excluding water provinces, Shahrivar has 168, which means that we'll each have 14 on average. This is pretty standard, in my experience, for a small-medium sized game (which is what I'm used to). If people would rather have something a little bigger, I'm not opposed to changing the map to something else. Though if you're worried about LA T'ien Ch'i expansion, check out your Ancestor Vessels!

Do let me know if a significant number of us would like a map change, we can certainly do that. Riverlands is also a possibility- 226 land + 19 water provinces would give us an average of 18-19 provinces each, exclusive of water provs. Would make the game somewhat bigger.

Nightfall
April 29th, 2012, 08:06 PM
Map isn't too small, 14-15 provinces per player is actually on the big side; map looks fine to me...

Keep in mind that average expansion is going to be a little slow anyway, it is LA with indys set to 7, half the starting armies may struggle to take a province...

From the little testing I've done there seems to be a LOT of pop on the map too, which should be interesting.

decourcy
April 29th, 2012, 09:11 PM
No, the map is fine; i need to try new maps more, i have been using Lutes maps almost exclusively.

I also from glancing at the map tonight thought there were 140 land provinces, teach me to glance count.

No, the ancestor vessels are in the top 3 or 4 sacred troops but too expensive for early expansion. I enjoy early age the most so i SP that, but the couple of people i have MP with like MA so we use that, so this is my first experience with LA.

I did a little start on this map and played 6 turns to get an idea... yea, composite bows suck in LA! I miss my Imperial crossbowmen. I had set my archers to 'fire archers' confidently expecting my composite bowmen to slaughter those pathetic short bowmen. Yea, um, they have plate armour. On a short bowmen. Dude.

Finalgenesis
April 29th, 2012, 11:41 PM
And I demand cookies... with milk!

Humor aside, I did note the start issue, but that's normally the case with most maps without a "no start" mp fix. Though honestly I have no qualms with a more luck based start generation as is the case here.

I do have a suggestion though if it's a serious enough issue for some players, I recall in a few MP games I was in (including Kindanoob), someone was kind enough to do a "no start" fix to the map. Basically selecting startable spots with as equal a footing as possible, with criteria like each start spot must have at least 4 neighbor and be spaced at 3 away from any other starting spot ...etc.

If needs must I'll volunteer to do this, though it'll be my first (preferably someone more experienced do this instead).

So Groundworm let me know, and if anyone with thoughts on the matter do voice them. I myself have no preference between a mp fixed start or a luck start approach.

Is there a link to roaring rhinos? I cant find it on the llama list

Groundworm
April 30th, 2012, 01:42 AM
After looking at Roaring Rhinos, I'm fine with it. To address specific concerns:

Roaring Rhinos has almost exactly the same number of provinces as Shahrivar, with almost the same distribution of land and water provinces. It shouldn't inflate the scale of the game. And it is, as requested, wrap-around. Though, after making several new games and looking at starting positions (about 25 different games), there are definitely some starting positions with only 3 adjacencies.

And I have no issue with 30h turns. Since several people have asked, I'll set turns to 30h. I've seen that done in some games, but I've always wondered: what's the advantage?

So, in sum: map is now Realm of Roaring Rhinos, and turn length will start at 30h.

Realm of Rampaging Roaches or Realm of Roaring Rhinos?

You can't upload these maps using their original titles, as they already exist on the server under these names. Thus you have to call it a different name, but unless you are altering map from the original, there is no need to upload it on the server...as its already there.

You have a link in the game thread for players to download the map from...and you,we, and I are good to go.

In the future rather than asking for a change at the last minute, you should maybe bring it up a little earlier.

Especially since I tested several nations and pretenders on the original map to find a combo that I liked.

I tested my pretender on the original map, but I don't see any big issue and I'm fairly indifferent as to what map we use. I calculate a baseline 11 out of 12 chance that I will lose regardless, so I defer to others.

I am however a bit unclear as to what map file I should be downloading at this point, and from where. It seems there were some problems for some folks and maybe some file renames. I'd like to test out the map a bit before we start, if someone can clarify (also do we need to change the file name or anything else?)

Yeah my odds were wildly optimistic especially because I am quite sure I don't know all of the ways CBM 1.92 has changed vanilla so I look forward to planning a research path that leads to nowhere. :)

Speaking of which, is there any single document that explains the CBM changes vs. vanilla? As far as I can tell, every changelog for CBM is just listing changes from the previous CBM, but since I've been out of the loop for a while that doesn't help much especially since I find the hard-copy manual still pretty useful.

Then again maybe you would rather roll the Utgardian noob than provide info! :)

If you install EDM 1.21 separately and enable it (as opposed to the version that comes with CBM 1.92), it comes with a special testing feature. Start up a new game in the early age, and at the bottom of the nation selection list you'll find "Endgame Diversity Mod, testing nation". If you select this as your nation, you'll have access to every single summon available in EDM as recruitable commanders for 1g & 1 resource. This should allow you to see what they can do, at least, if not what they're actually capable of in battle. Hope this helps.

Let's try to have our pretenders submitted by Wednesday. Still waiting on Whollaborg, Bat/man, shard, and, well... me. :) Does this sound reasonable?

Today is the 1st of may........

I hope I am wrong....but the maths doesn't add up to a quick start.

On an unrelated subject, we should probably have a paragraph in the OP on silent quitting too.

How about the one irfna used in noobswithblah:

If you want to quit mid-game for whatever reason, please allow me to find a sub! Just post and say you're done! Having someone stale out or spontaneously go AI really sucks! It's ok if you're losing and want to quit, just say so in this thread and let me find a sub!!!

I've updated the original post with the new map, 30h turn duration, and clause about abandoning the game.

HoleyDooley, I was noticing Whollaborg's absence myself. If he shows up and wants to play, that's fine with me, but I've opened the game up for one more slot. If he doesn't show up or we don't get any interest in the next day, I'll start the game tomorrow and we'll just play with 11.

Oh, and thanks to everyone for your thoughts and contributions, as well as your patience. I'm looking forward to playing with you all. :)

Well don't be surprised there is a restart!

Not Groundworm's fault though, but seems we have a hijacker or possibly two.

There are submissions for Chelm and Mictlan but no one owning them on the first post. One could be scholle, though he hasn't stated if he has submitted his nation yet, as requested.

Batman of course hasn't submitted his yet, but the game has started.....
thus I can see a restart, and hopefully we can banish either or both of Chelm/Mictlan if they are not supposed to be in this game.

Bat/man
May 1st, 2012, 10:02 PM
Ug.

On page 4, you can see that Cyborg Killer tried to sign up as La-Man, and Ragnarok as abysia.

But they never got acknowledged on page1.. and several people joined thereafter.

I could've swore that Man (Chelms) was on the OP list before, I'm totally confused now as to who is whom.

Mictlan looks like a mystery entry to me.

I'm fine either keeping this game or restarting, only that it needs to be decided which in the first 2 turns.

Also might want to do an admin e-mail all while getting a reply on the mystery players, otherwise we can't do diplo with them at all.

Ah, I remember the responsibilities of being an admin fondly, thanks Groundworm ;)

Just read through and realized that bat/man's spot has been usurped (brain fart). Definitely a restart

I checked my excel game file which has a list of players and race signed up and Man (chelms) seems to be on the list (also in my MP simulation game). I'll post up the race list / player I have once I get home just for reference.

I was going to post about this re: who are Man and Mictlan supposed to be, and why isn't Bogarus listed? But I see I was beaten to the punch.

We will definitely restart the game- I will take the game off of Llamaserver now. Before I put it up again, I would like 2 pieces of information:

1) what nation is Schoelle playing?
2) who signed up as Man (Chelms)? Reason I'm asking is because you're not supposed to be in this game.

Apologies to Bat/man for his spot being usurped. Once we get the 2 above issues resolved, we can restart.

Understandable, Whollaborg. Since you're still interested and were one of the first in the game (and Arco is still unclaimed), I'm making an administrative decision to expand the game to 13 players.

Hope no one objects. It lowers provinces/player exclusive of water provs from just over 14 to exactly 13. The game just got a little more cutthroat, but it shouldn't make that much of a difference in the end.

In-character:

I am so disappointed. Your absence means dinner is now a few steps farther away. I had so looked forward to savoring your marrow cracked from your large bones, now that you've been properly fattened.

I had so looked forward to the vinyard of your blood, hot and salty. And what repast would be complete without music - the lamentations of your women and children - and the sweet smell of razed buildings and farms.

And there is, indeed, a sense of progress and fulfilment to see your dead bodies work my fields to my greater glory.

Perhaps another time, then? To my greater glory - Death my delight - Bogarus my chosen instrument...

Came upon a list of banned exploits and realized our game forgot the standard banned antics list. Stolen from Calahan's game:

Banned Exploits

1. Copying the script orders from Bogus and his friends to others commanders (ie. The 'Fire Commanders' orders).
2. Overloading other players labs by sending them lots of items they did not request. Be they worthless or valuable.
3. Recruiting free Wild Ettin's
4. Exploiting obvious mod bugs. If you find something which is obviously wrong or looks wrong then you have a duty to report it, and not exploit the bug until the admin makes a decision on it.
5. If you notice a player is staling, expecially if it's your current opponent, then you have duty to report it to the admin.
6. Silently beating up a known staling player is being a serious douche bag (see 8).
7. No move-blocking by probing enemy armies with lone commanders. If you want to probe an enemy army then hide a Scout in that province and use the "Attack Current Province" command, as that runs no risk of blocking enemy movement. Any player that uses move-blocking is in immediate violation of the next rule.
8. Being a general douche bag is not allowed in this game. This is probably the most important rule of the game, and if you break it then you can expect to be kicked out.

Looks fine to me, shall we agree to abide by this?

Meh, I was intentionly trying something wacky with my pretender this game, and I knew I was pretty stuffed as soon as I spawned on the island (the EXACT reason I wasn't happy about the map change btw); the only hope was to rush one side to establish a foothold on the mainland.

My bad luck held up though with who and what is on all three sides.

That said though, the fight wasn't that one sided, the cavalry was certainly a loss, but I did kill 15 devils I think... the infantry was mostly just a merc and what was left of my starting army (which struggles against indies at 7).

no, why would i be? I am just commenting on how friendly this forum is compared to another. Although my mass composite bowmen do not hurt the Marignon heavy cavalry so this could be dicey!

Of course, Marignon, i would not be sending 60 crossbowmen north to meet your cavalry, i wouldn't do that!

This being my first experience with CBM is a bit tough, i had not realized they had lowered the strength of LA Tien Chi PD. I built more than i should have counting on the best PD in the game, and it was not the PD of vanilla! That was a surprise, and not a good one. Oof.

Ahum. Are you complaining about your own unfriendliness? Tsk tsk tsk.

(Full disclosure, I'm leaving out the posts made by Maerlande).

Just FYI, while this forum might be friendlier, it is also more often wrong, or gives imprecise advice. But a lot of people read both fora, or even more. So next time you start to talk bad about the other forum, you might not want to do it publicly.

Next time, just pick Agartha yourself. Playing well with them in MP is harder than it looks.

Edit, wow dude, you have an attitude problem:

I'm not creepy enough to be stalking this thread.

Actually, that's exactly what you are doing, whether it's collective or individual effort is irrelevant, and it's the most odious of the "high school girl" like clique behaviour that is favoured by some of the people on the dom3mods forum.

Some of the regulars on that forum certainly have opinions worth listening to, and many of them make substantial and important contributions to the dominions community; but the reputation they have as a group is both justified and entirely their own fault.

Regardless of whether decourcy was justified in his feelings or not, and whether he actually quits or not, I find the fact that you thanked him for his last post disgusting, which is a pity, because I had some respect for you before that.

Snacktime
June 9th, 2012, 11:32 PM
Soy, I am totally ignorant of who you are and your past conversations with decourcy. But I do know that this thread is the thread for a perfectly friendly MP game in which (a) decourcy is playing, (b) everyone seems to be playing honorably and having a fine time, and (c) you aren't playing.

So how shall we understand your decision to post? You just felt you had to "stick up for" your other forum? Because decourcy indirectly suggested your forum isn't friendly and he likes this one better?

If you were trying to convince third parties like myself that decourcy is wrong, and actually your other forum is the bee's knees and is quite friendly and welcoming, #epicfail.

I really don't want decourcy to quit and I ask that you don't post on this thread any more. If you feel the need, start your own thread (apparently you have your own forum even) or pm people if you want to have a flamewar. Thanks.

Soyweiser
June 11th, 2012, 12:36 PM
It isn't my forum. It is sombre's. He was banned from here for various reasons. I only tend to voice remarks from people made there (or on irc) because they cannot post here anymore. (And only if I think that the remarks are valuable. Not all maerlande's rants are that worthwhile, or even interesting)).

I only pointed out the hypocrisy inherent in the statements made by decourcy. As his remarks made in the other forum made himself more unwelcome there. He only got the reaction by being a twat there. (And here btw, the posts he made here where linked by this thread: http://z7.invisionfree.com/Dom3mods/index.php?showtopic=774 that is how I found this). Also, decourcy was a source of entertainment on the irc channel. I pointed out that it would be really bad form for people to like decourcies "I quit" message. Hishtagat did. But she felt lonely, so I also thanked it. Bad form. Totally. Disgusting, perhaps. But in a certain way, it is also funny. In a trolling way.

[Hishtagat] I'm all about bad form.
[Hishtagat] I'm The Worst.

But, I didn't start posting about another forum in this thread. You can't just start this stuff and not expect people to react.

One thing, like has been said before, the other forum isn't always a nice place. But it never pretends to be. That is why I can say stuff like **** and ***** and even *********************** **** ***** ******** there, and not here. The people there are twats, over reacting man children, sometimes even. And have a way to much 'in your face' attitude. But they do tend to take a lot of the PC and politics around dom3 a lot less serious.

Personally, I would rather not have decourcy quit. But that is because deep inside I'm a big hippy that wants everybody to get along. (And free love, lets not forget that). But he does need to have a little bit tougher skin. He reaps what he sows. (Of course, now you guys can post about me in other game threads I play in).

@Snacktime, I respect your opinion. But it is rather hard to start a flamewar in pm's :P. And starting a new thread would decrease my troll points (http://www.criticalmiss.com/issue9/troll1.html).

Further discussion about this subject please post here: http://z7.invisionfree.com/Dom3mods/index.php?showtopic=774 in the "all rumours are true" thread. If people react to me here (in this "mp smiting season" thread) I will continue to react here. If you guys post at dom3mods, I will respect your wishes and only discuss it there.

Schoelle played well. Really well. Patala even tried to get a cease fire a few turns back despite Chelm's much smaller size because he was such a treat. But ultimately luck was against him and a single paralyze got through some pretty high MR and that was the end of Chelms.

Hey Carpet,

I'm not quite the threat to Marrignon, Utgard, Agartha, Bogarus, Ti'en Chi and Gath as i am to you. In fact, if you are frightened of me, the world should be that much more frightened of Marrignon, and Utgard who are more powerful than I and of Agartha who i would rank equivalently. No... the world does not worry about Monkeys with chalices since that chalice is following an army around (stealthily) to prevent affliction accumulation because the monkeys have zero death access and no way of getting Tarts. That doesn't even make Zmeys and devils blink.

Still thinking that you should have broken your NAP(5) with me for a few gold? Who bribed you? Think maybe it was one of the nations i listed? Was it worth it? Maybe you should be suing for peace with me- i'm not interested in war with you- thats why i bribed you for a NAP(5). I suggest you rethink your long-term strategy.

PS: @Everyone: anyone want to sell me a skull staff booster? I got the death gems to make it and a bit of gold to pay you for your trouble... i need to start building my tartarian factory (LOL). Seriously though... i would like to buy a skull staff.

Hrm? Aren't we playing CBM 1.92? Isn't the chalice nerfed to uselessness? I'm soooo rusty!

For the record, I'd like to say we at Bogarus haven't bribed Pythium, I think Carpetbagger is calling it as he sees it.

Bogarus is not sure which is stronger - Marignon or Patala. It's a matchup I'd buy popcorn to see.

Immaculate

I said he was bribed because that is what he wrote in his PM to me when he broke the NAP.

Carpetbagger
July 5th, 2012, 11:38 AM
All monkey lies!:)

Patala is the aggressor, I no longer desire an NAP so I am attacked. Marignon is strong but seems to be having a hard time putting an end to Ulm. The chalice healed Patala’s blinded dragon and still has many uses besides just tarts.

I asked for the attention and Pythium’s demise by ending the NAP. When Pythium is rolled by Patala then there will be no question to whom is the top Ape in the game.;)

"Bat/man have been banned for duplicate accounts"

Immaculate
July 5th, 2012, 12:24 PM
In response to Carpet Bagger's rhetoric (this is sort of fun)...

1) He did indeed write that he was bribed to end his NAP with me.
2) He was responsible for breaking the NAP, not me.
3) I would be a fool not to think that someone breaking a NAP is someone who wants war.
4) I offer you (Pythium) peace.

These factors seem to suggest that Patala is NOT the aggressor.

Bat/man is Chris Pearsedon (spelling?) - that is probably the second account they are referring to.

Bat/man has been banned from the Shrapnel forums. Not sure of the specifics, and it really doesn't matter much. What matters is that he can no longer effectively communicate outside of the game, and this is an insurmountable difficulty for him. He's asked me to find a sub for him.
