Don't flame me....
Serious question from very interested person.
If I purchase this game (which looks phenomenal), how active is the online community still? Easy for a noob to get in and find a few games and get better?...or have most moved on?
(the only reason I ask is the age of the game)

I would say is still very active. Just visit some of the sites that host games like the ones shown on this thread
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=40486
and you would see a bunch of games running.

I just started a couple months ago, and it seems plenty active. New multiplayer games kick up every week it seems.

Yep. I just started playing MP in January and have probably seen about 20 games involving noobs get started. Pretty good clip.

Remember, SP is there for practice only and can get kind of boring since the AI sucks and Microing is boring. But I find that MP is a blast.

The people are great too. Diplomacy and chatting it up with the folks is half the fun!

Remember that SP, and MP, can get boring. But enjoy them for as long as you can. Then step up.
Most people eventually start using special settings, maps, mods, 3rd party programs to extend the enjoyment (both SP and MP) into years worth. But you can still find newbie games.
There are at least 4 fan-made servers that keep pretty busy running Dom3 games. And this is not the only forum. There are Dom3 forums and groups on many sites around the net. Also there are multiple IRC channels (chat rooms) where quicky games can be joined.
