I like the way these games are now but I'm just curious why you didn't include an option for units to have a rectangular marker with the Nato symbols? Thanks

The thing that drew me to the game back when it arrived in the 90s was that it actually looked like a proper 1/300 tabletop wargame. Just like the normal games we played down at the wargames club with the WRG and TTG rules sets, and harking back to the original rules I had played using Airfix 1/72 models since 1969 or so after buying a copy of Terry Wises "Introduction to Battle Gaming", and then the later books of Donald Featherstone, Charles Grant et al.
So why ruin the original SSI design by replacing models with paper-shuffling bored game counters of the Avalon Hill variety?
Boring NATO symbol counters would totally destroy the games look and feel as a proper tabletop wargame using model soldiers.
Cheers
Andy

Take into consideration that all units have direction and vehicles have additionally independent of that turret direction. That would be hard to picture with NATO counters. Those are much better for bigger scope strategy games.
Of course if you really like the idea you can mode the NATO counters in without breaking PBEM compatibility.

With the current icons you are taking part in a simulation of ground combat. With the Nato counters, you are moving pieces on a board. I like it the way it is.

I have to agree with everyone else; unless you want to imagine being a division commander seeing maps with symbols, I dont see the reason to make this change.

Ya,NATO symbols look really good with operational or higher level wargames, but at scales such as Steel Panthers, models of the various units look best. I especialy like the tanks, infantry guns, and HMGs. Anything installed on tripods.
