I've attached an interactive guide that helps display the relationship between map size, purchase points, and battalion frontage.

Guide previews:

Here's the same guide but the average battalion cost has been raised to 5000 to model armoured or more modern battalions:

Here the guide has the average battalion cost raised to 6000, and the frontages have been changed to 6000 and 3000, for modern mobile forces:

There's notes and explanations in the downloadable spreadsheet.

You were able to open the zip file, but unable to open the xls file?

Sorry, but it needs to remain in a spreadsheet format because the user has to choose the average points they want battalions to cost (you can also adjust battalion frontage).

Any version of Microsoft Excel should open the file, and there's other software that should allow you to open and edit xls spreadsheets.

Openoffice.org have free software that will view and edit spreadsheets:
https://www.openoffice.org/

There's even office phone apps that will allow you to view and edit the file.
