View Full Version : Bridge Layers, I know this comes up alot...

Alright, so in the game, when artillery of a certain size is used, it adds crater graphics to a hex and changes the hex type to include craters, which provide cover for infantry, correct? So, would it be possible to have a unit with an artillery piece with a really big warhead, a range of 1, and 0:0 kill and penetration. Then the game could see if a warhead of that size was indirect fired on a hex, it would change it, but instead of 'crater' it would form 'bridge' and make the hex be treated as clear or road for infantry/vehicles. Is this a possible way to implement a bridge layer? Would the explosion still potentially kill people/scare people with 0 kill and pen? Of course there are realism issues, like how the ammo trucks manage to resupply bridges... but it might be an easy way to implement a gameplay change a lot of people would like, (if of course it can even be implemented this way).
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Not a clue.
Make one and try it out and see what happens.

an alternate method, which "works" in game, is to use an amphibious vehicle with a large carry capacity and "park" it in the river/marsh, etc and use it as a ferry/bridge.
examples in game include:
Israel #377 "Timsakh" (French Gillois ferry)
Russia #983 GSP Ferry
Your vehicles can then drive up to the river/amphib, load onto it and unload on the other bank. Not as fast as driving down a road but I'm guessing a tank never thunders over a temporary bridge anyway...

I'd assumed the crater mechanic was hardcoded, this was more of a suggestion towards devs, could I manipulate how tile changes due to explosives works?

To an extent.
As you mentioned you can "create" craters which causes the tile to change.
Another way to do that would be to create a "suicide bomber" type unit that would be mobile thus able to effect the hex you wanted with its' BIG explosive.

Ok, thanks. So I guess the best it can be used for is to create infantry cover, which probably wouldn't be worthwhile in most games.

Depends how much infantry you care about your infantry surviving.
