Is there any way to cause a unit to be suppressed at the beginning of a scenario without an artillery bombardment? I ask because I'm trying to simulate a surprise attack where the defenders are entirely unprepared.

Not to my knowledge.
You could possibly do it as a saved game @ turn 1, perhaps? - but then its not on the scenario list for players to find easily or read the briefing etc.
For the human player being surprised, you could have crews away from vehicles some distance 'sleeping in a barn', and others straggling in as reinforcements. But that would not play well for the AI.

You might be able to do it as a save game then save and manually make it a scenario file then edit from there. I'd run my own tests but I'm up to my armpits with work ATM

Don, your suggestion worked like a charm! I used a battery of light artillery, so as not to cause any craters, set the bombardment for the initial turn, played it, saved it, and renamed the save file to a scenario file. Reloaded the scenario in the editor, the enemy units are all pinned, retreating, or routed. Which is fine until their reinforcements arrive!
Thank you, gentlemen.
