The mother of all WW2 amphibious landings! :D

This scenario represents the landing of the 4th and 5th Marine Division on Iwo Jima (Operation "Detachment") on February 19, 1945 and is the first in a row (like my Peleliu scenarios).

A big one again (499 units)!

Scenario #526

New version 0.96

Changes from version 0.95 to 0.96:

1. Changed the Japanese bombardment phase
2. Removed the LVT-4 Flame. Found no information about the use at Iwo Jima. Instead added eight Flamethrower teams
3. Add 1 point side armour to the LVT-2 (field modification: 1/4" plate in the cargo compartment)
4. Some corrections in the scenario text
5. Changed some troops: Names, ammo, armour and icons
6. Relocation of some troops
7. Some changes of the map (make it more dirty and rocky)

And two question to the lonely's outside: :D

1) I've found no information about the operations of the CV-17 Bunker Hill in the Iwo Jima assault (Feb., 19th). I know she was there, but maybe only CAP and ASW missions?
2) Is the scenario text ok? I'm NOT a native english speaker.

Enjoy!

Seems to be very hard to be "win without big losses" but I can try to play this (if I have time);)...

Hmm I noticed that 5inch DD gun has mg sound... Mobhack had sound marked as "0" but there's still mg sound. How I can change it? Any help?

Hello Warhero!

Thanks for your reply! :)

I've corrected the sound (change unit class from "Torpedo boat" to "LCG"). Now the 5in DD-guns have the right one.

Well can you give unit number which uses 5inch DD gun? I found unit 225 Destroyer NGFS but it has class 155 Off Map Heavy Artillery... Is 5inch Naval gun (unit 056) different than DD gun?

Eh if you mean unit 201=M4 Early (tank)unused in Mobhack.

And if you mean weapon 201=weapon class 10 (Naval Artillery). There's no any LCG in picklist:O... Where it is?

just FYI.......you write

The human player should take the US Marines side. Not designed for play with the Japanese as AI.*

If the human player is the USMC then the AI is playing the Japanese side.....what that should say is.......

"The human player should take the US Marines side. The scenario was not designed to be played from the Japanese side"

Hello,

for those playtesters who haven't much time, here is a saved game file. End of turn 19, all movements, attacks and bombardment planing done, just quit the order phase. The Marines are two turns away from the beaches.

So far the bombardment and assault is ok (but can be done better). Some coastal guns left to hunt down (priority targets!!).

Saved Game #092!!!

Have fun!

I seem to recall a post that said B-29's were used in this scenario but they should be B-24's...... that ring a bell with anyone ???

Don, no idea; but the US ARMY AIR FORCES IN WW2, VOL 5 has some stuff about the preliminary bombardments on Iwo:

http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/AAF/V/AAF-V-19.html

Summarized:

While B-29s did take part in the initial bombardment of Iwo starting December 1944; they were quickly replaced by B-24s in the neutralization role, and B-24s took direct part in the fighting (excerpts below):

Accordingly, long-range fighters as well as Seventh Air Force B-24's were to participate in the assault phase of DETACHMENT and control was vested in Harmon when he became commander of the Strategic Air Force, POA (Task Force 93) on 6 December.

..

D-day, 19 February, dawned clear. Task Force 58, its Tokyo strikes completed, had come on for the assault and two of its battleships and thirteen cruisers joined in the neutralization fire as Marines shifted from transports into the landing craft. Between H minus 1 and H-hour (0800 to 0900), while the amphibious tractors maneuvered into position, the warships laid down a barrage, and aircraft from the escorts and Mitscher's fast carriers swept in. A strike by 44 B-24's had been scheduled, but when over half of them aborted, only 15 arrived to drop 19 tons of 100-pound GP's on the island's eastern defenses.

...

On three occasions small formations of B-24's were called up from the Marianas to bomb defensive positions, but the Seventh's most important contribution to the ground fighting was through its fighters.
