When a unit is adjacent to a tank, is there any way to get the unit to fire at the tank rather than do an assault?

Select T key to target the tank, then use the W key dialogue to select the desired (presumably A/T) weapon.

That is my standard way to fire an RPG (or whatever) without triggering an undesired close assault.

If I turn off all weapons except AT (e.g. the RPG) in the rightclick-menu - does this prevent close assaults as well?

To be honest until now I did never need the T-W-key-procedure because I thought I could select the weapons to use more easily by turning off the other ones...please correct me if I'm wrong.

Probably a case of six of one and half a dozen of the other. I find the given process quicker for me, since I am used to it.

Plus I prefer a few quick keystrokes over fiddly mouse pointing and clicking to turn weapons off and then reversing the process once finished. (Or forgetting to turn them back on, as I tend to do:doh:!)

W key is a lot quicker, also handy in other cases such as wanting to fire a MG ranging shot before firing the main weapon.

I tried the T/W technique but the unit would still close assault using the selected weapon. After the T/W I would do the F key, is there something else I should be doing?

The W key fires the selected weapon that you select using the 1-4 key in the dialogue that lists weapons. IF the weapon selected has shots and ammo of course - if not, it will do nothing AFAIR.

There is no need to use the F key after that unless you want to fire all/assault as usual after firing the one selected weapon.

When I press the W key and then select the weapon, nothing happens. The weapon has plenty of ammo. That's why I then pressed the F key, but then the unit would do a close assault.

There must be a target set for the firing unit to shoot at. Did you set one with the T key?. Otherwise, nothing will happen.

Same if the selected target is out of range of the selected weapon.

The chosen weapon must have 1 or more available shots - all the ammo in the world is of no use if the weapon is showing 0 shots left for this turn.

Also, if your unit is in retreat status or worse, then you will need to rally it back to at least pinned, or nothing will happen.

I press the T key, which takes me to the targeting screen where I press the select target button. Then I press the W key following which I click on the weapon. At this point nothing happens.

The unit has either no suppression or Ready status.

Then I press the W key following which I click on the weapon.

This might be the problem. After pressing the W key, you need to select the weapon by selecting a number [1-4] from the keyboard - clicking with mouse does not work in this case.

Err - you are clicking on click on the dialogue with the mouse:confused:?.

Press the numeric key corresponding to the desired weapon. As stated in my preceding post #7:

The W key fires the selected weapon that you select using the 1-4 key in the dialogue that lists weapons

This procedure is laid out in the Tutorial Scenario walk-through section entitled "Targeting an enemy unit using the " W " hotkey".
