Interesting. I wonder if this will happen or if it could be done any better than it is here?

Why? What about it?
It's good! It is good!

Gary Grigsby is the Lord of the best wargames. It's a very good news that now we'll have a tactical wargame from him again after all this time creating operational wargames. And NOT just any tactical wargame, it is actually THE spiritual successor to our most beloved game that is Steel Panthers! It's like we've struck a needle in the haystack!

If I can program in C++ I'd volunteer without pay, just for the honor of working with him and the fun of engineering wargaming ideas.

Potentially good news, though I wonder if I would still be playing it 20 years after it comes out?

I read about this somewhere, can't remember the publication. It sounds interesting though. I wonder how different it could possibly be from the one we have today.

A salivating prospect indeed, although with advanced maturity comes the propensity to drool. Anyway sure hope it pans out before I croak!

Hmm I suppose that next SP will be commercial game (not free as WinMBT/WW2/SPWAW)?

"...the spiritual successor to Steel Panthers"

I am troubled by this phrase. They did not use 'updated' or 'modernize' or 'conversion to XXX game engine', many spiritual successors to old classic DOS games were less than stellar.
The primary reason for this effort will not be to make a dedicated group of fans happy. It will be to develop a product that will appeal to a large market share. The feel of an Avalon Hill board game is not an experience bringing back happy memories to a 18-30 year old demographic much less the IGYG game play.
I hope it will not end up a 'World of Tanks' copy and would be surprised if it is just 'Winspww2' with better graphics.
A rotational 3D map would be nice with a 3/4th view option rather than just overhead. A contour line overlay toggle also.
Hopefully it will be easy to mod because I can guarantee that they better have every detail of the weapon/vehicle database correct or there will be "no joy in Mudville".

I can say with some experience that getting "every detail of the weapon/vehicle database correct" to the point someone won't nitpick some detail that doesn't agree with their source is an impossible feat.

My favourite example is and always will be the Tiger tank......you'd think by now that this...one of the most talked and written about tanks arguably ever.......that you would find no deviation in accepted spec but here's two picked at random

note the speed claimed
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_I
http://www.worldwar2aces.com/tiger-tank/

Road speed varies by 7.4 km/h 38 km/h vs 45.4 km/h

In this game that would be the difference between 13 and 15

agrees with wiki

http://www.fprado.com/armorsite/tiger1.htm

says 45 kph

Profile Publications claims max road speed 23 mph and that equals 37.01491 km/h

I rest my case.....:D

EDIT
and...
http://www.wwiivehicles.com/germany/vehicle/heavy-tank/pzkpfw-vi-e-heavy-tank.asp

lists all claims.....
Speed - Road 22.9 mph, 23 mph, 23.5 mph, 24 mph
37 kph, 38 kph, 45.4

I cannot see it having anywhere near the amount of units this game has, nobody would be that mad nowadays to attempt something like that. If they take the data from the original games without further research things wont be correct.
Spiritual successor so new incarnation & based on which version of SP?
Has the potential to be great starting from scratch many things you could do differently or add. Take ATGs units could have 2 states limbered & unlimbered or add turret speeds to help differentiate tanks SPGs, attacking a Tiger from all angles now becomes a bit easier. Simple things like HEAT using a different accuracy model to AP or vehicles using some MP to accelerate from stationary. Global visibility reworked to allow star shells & gun flashes etc.
Could be great I would guess adding or improving game mechanics is the easy part, building an AI that can use them not so much.

Apparently, the Germans didn't agree with themselves on the matter...

WaPrüf data, November 1943
Maximum speed: 45 kmh/28 mph
Sustained road speed (autobahn): 30 kmh/19 mph
Sustained speed on average terrain: 20-25 kmh/13-16 mph

Henschel factory data, February 1944
Sustained speed on road (Autobahn): 40 kmh/25 mph
Sustained speed on average terrain: 20-25 kmh/13-16 mph
Vehicle speed at 3000 rpm in 8th gear: 45 kmh/28 mph
Vehicle speed at 3000 rpm in 7th gear: 30 kmh/19 mph

By November 1943, the engined rpm was governed to 2500, which might explain some of the difference.

Yet the Henschel factory February 1944 data reports vehicle speed @ 3000 rpm...:D

Yeah, I'm a bit skeptical, as I've heard other games compared to Steel Panthers over the years. The Close Combat series comes to mind, a decent game for real time, but that's not even close IMO. I'd say the closest is "Tigers on the Hunt" based closely on the "Squad Leader" board games; arguably the daddy of all WWII games including SP. SP just took all the thick rule books out of it and let the player play.

Sitherine has published some decent stuff. I like that they revived “Panzer General” (now redone as “Order of Battle”), a good fun, beer and pretzels operational level WWII game. Now, Gary definitely makes a hardcore, number crunching, strategic level games. I’m wondering if he can make lightning strike again since his first go round with the tactical level SP series so long ago. A lot sure has changed since then. It will definitely be interesting to follow. I hope they stick with YouGoIGo and post a developers log. I'm sure it's years off though. If they can do a quarter of the longevity of SPWW2 they would have quite an accomplishment.
