144 New or Revised Game Guide Photos / Graphics
1/ Secure PBEM is once again Secure. At some point in the past the code that checked for installation path had been commented out. We became aware of this when a player reported his opponents seem to have far too much foreknowledge of events and in testing we discovered that is was indeed possible to have two installations of a PBEM game and both would load secure PBEM moves allowing unscrupulous players the chance to preview play the turn on their mirror game as a "scouting" game then play the actual turn on their set up game. This loophole in the security code is now closed. If attempted, the game in the mirror copy will refuse to load. The game has been returned to what we claimed it would do in the game guide....."you cannot move a copy of your secure PBEM turn to another install of winSPMBT or winSPWW2 ....it will not play. "
2/ Load cost info for Anti Tank Guns, Field Guns and Mortars now reports the combined true load cost of the Gun + Crew so, for example, a gun or mortar with a load cost of 2 for the weapon and a crew of 8 will now show the true load cost for that unit as 10.
3/ In the Purchase Screen, Anti Tank Guns, Field Guns and Mortars that are combined with transport units will now ONLY show the vehicles capable of transporting the gun selected so in a formation that might have a wide range of gun/mortar choices couple with a wide range of towing vehicles to choose from players can now be confident that the combination of gun and towing vehicles they choose will indeed tow the gun selected. You no longer have to manually check the carry capacity of a vehicle then add up the carry cost of the gun and it's crew. The game will only offer gun / towing vehicles that will work together.
4/ In MOBHack, what used to be the "Weight" data entry field is now *correctly* labeled for its actual function ……the Load Cost for that particular unit.
5/ Campaign Cores are now limited to 24000 points. We had to limit points to prevent situations that had been reported many times where players had allowed their core and support to get so large that the AI could not buy enough units to mount a proper advance or attack battle.
6/ Under some circumstances, there were guns that would not fire AP rounds at targets that required AP rounds but use HE instead. That tangled bit of code has been sorted out and the problem eliminated.
7/ Under some circumstances, the AI would turn your own guns on you. We have not noticed a repeat of that phenomena since a small bit of code was changed.
9/ Cultivated fields have been removed from viewing in the mini map. They served no real purpose and just cluttered up the mini map…. However, rice paddies still show up as they can be hazards to vehicles and can be used as a point of reference.
10/ All GameOptions and MOBHack screens have been checked for erroneous mouse over messages and corrected.
11/ Under some conditions foxholes were not being cleared when units were moved and re-dug-in during deployment and in the editor. We believe this to be corrected now.
12/ Maps may now have TXT files associated with them so map makers can now explain and "sign" their work. These text files can be manually added to the Maps folder named the same way as the map except with the ".txt" extension. There are examples in the patch to use as guidelines and the process has been streamlined. All that needs to be remembered is to end a paragraph with a ' * ' and use the same to leave a space between paragraphs. Map text length is not restricted.
13/ MOBHack now allows unit and formation information text files to be edited directly from MOBHack. As with maps all that needs to be remembered is to end a paragraph with a ' * ' and use the same to leave a space between paragraphs.
• UNIT information should be restricted to roughly 150 characters or three medium-length paragraphs.
• FORMATION information can as long as needed as formation Information references a separate screen whereas Unit information does not.
14/ The Campaign "blank screen Review Unit bug" should now be eliminated.
15/ The blast radius circle now displays as two pixels wide making it easier to see on some terrain combinations.
16/ In the custom map editor, the EXIT button has been moved to the bottom of the screen to prevent accidentally exiting the editor and losing your work.
17/ April is now a "spring transition" month so the ground may have green vegetation but the trees are bare of leaves. Previously the game visually went from late winter in March to full summer foliage in April.
18/ "Rough slope" messages were being generated on roads. This has been corrected.
19/ The "Information" button that appeared when you right-clicked on a unit has been renamed the more correct "Unit Data"
20/ Fires from burning wrecks NO LONGER always obscures vision through the hex. A random variable has been added to smoke from wrecked vehicles that will sometimes allow LOS vision through that hex so unlike in the past, being behind a burning wreck no longer guarantees you are out of LOS. It also means that you can no longer be safe from return fire from units that had been following the tank you just knocked out.
This is an example from early testing. The dark hexes show what the game previously obscured because of smoke from burning wrecks
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=15229&stc=1&d=1520081926
21/ In game drop shadow around units has been increased. We have gone from what might be described as an "early Afternoon Shadow" to a "Late Afternoon shadow ".
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=15230&stc=1&d=1520082058
This change defines units a bit better on the map
22/ An AAMG (or autocannon) in slot #4 is no longer treated as a fixed bow weapon. AAMG and autocannon in any slot is now treated as having 360 degree traverse.
23/ Both game guides and MoBHack Helps have had many updated screen graphics added.
24/ CD owners Only. In the main game screen and deployment screens, pressing the middle mouse button will centre the map on the currently selected unit and also simultaneously highlight all of the visible hexes from it.
25/ New load failure messages detail if it is a gun or vehicle class that was too large to fit a transport rather than just the generic "full" message.
26/ AAA hits on armoured aircraft were screening out most of the damage from the small warheads . AAA fire that hits a target aircraft now has a higher chance of doing damage.
27/ For CD owners only .The following menus now include a GOTO feature added .
• Save games List
• PBEM games List
• Tournament games List
• Scenarios List
• Campaign List
• Load and Save Custom Map List in the Main Game and the Custom Editor
•Load and Save Scenario List in the Game Editor and the Custom Editor
Simply press GOTO , enter the slot number you want and then press enter and the screen will update to that position. This addition to the code saves a lot of mouse clicking.
28/ For CD owners only. The extended map editor now allows you to strip all terrain from the map , leaving only the contours with one press of a button. This does a bit more than flood filling the map with base terrain that followed contours did.
29/ When making bombing runs aircraft Icons will now appear to be above the smoke generated by bombing and not appearing to fly through or under it.
30/ A secondary benefit to 29/ above. Any map text will now appear above any smoke generated by any event that creates smoke.
31/ Graphic changes…… There have been alterations made to the smoke and flame graphics that are displayed when tanks are knocked out.
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=15262&stc=1&d=1520432731
32/ For CD owners only. The functionality of the mini maps has been greatly expanded. The original purpose of the mini maps was to show a general overview of unit positions and allow players to quickly move the focus of the area they were playing by simply clicking on a new area on the mini map. This had more of a purpose in the original game where map sizes and screen resolution were fixed. As we expanded the size of maps and number of screen resolutions available and eventually set up the game to play at desktop resolution the mini map became less and less used as it's size shrank with the increase in resolution but now we have added code to help make it worthwhile once again.
The mini map can now be expanded to show the entire map by right clicking on it with the mouse if the map is larger than 100 hexes wide and 80 hexes high so it can now be expanded to show an entire large map up to 160 hexes wide and 200 hexes high.
As well a second, simplified view of the map can be generated by pressing the middle mouse button of your mouse on the mini map. This "RadarMini" view shows the main map , roads, contour lines and streams/ water rather than the coloured graduated terrain of the old style MiniMap. It's background colour is darker than the standard MiniMap to allow players a higher contrast between the friendly and enemy units, and the Victory Hex locations and is there to give players an alternative overview. The old mini gives a better quick glance overview of terrain height whereas the "RadarMini" gives a clearer overview of friendly and known enemy unit positions. Both types of maps can be viewed small or large if the map is large enough and all four types allow players to left click anywhere on the mini and that will change the position of the main map allowing players to view unit positons and move to new areas of the map with one left click on the mouse.
2x normal size for ease of comparison
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=15231&stc=1&d=1520082152
33/ The Information screen in the game encyclopaedia which is also the screen you see when you click on one of your units then press UNIT DATA, now includes a joined hull+ turret Icon , if it's a two piece Icon, a single piece Icon will show normally as a single Icon, at the bottom left of the screen at 2x normal size ( 1.5 x normal size for aircraft ).
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=15232&stc=1&d=1520082249
34/ The Armour Slope Calculator and the Armour Penetration Calculator can now be accessed directly from the GameOptions Utilities screen.
35/ The Scenario, save game, load map and Help screens have all been redone in the " Flat Screen" style of the Edit Campaign screen with more room for information especially the Help screen that now allows text right across the width of the window
36/ Units with Thermal imaging equipment and/or Laser range finders now are highlighted in Yellow in the purchase menu to they are spotted more easily
37/ The game now has the correct start dates for both North and South Korea.
38/ The Scenhack scenario data screen now allows you to change scenario dates to the full 2025 date limit. (Previously it maxed out at 1949 )
39/ The Mujahedeen vs Afghan Army will now use Afghanistan battle locations if fighting each other, not Syrian.
40/ Russia vs Mujahedeen from 11/2015 on will now give Syrian batlocs, as Russia vs Syrian rebels or other anti-Syrian groups.
41/ A :Show Blast Radius" ON/OFF control has been added to GameOptions Misc
42/ For CD owners only.Ongoing regular battles and scenarios ( but NOT PBEM or Campaign games ) can now be saved " As Scenarios" in the scenario folder from the battle window by pressing the "Scenario Save" button that has been added. This allows players and scenario designers an easy-to-use way to save a regular game as a scenario without having to manually rename and transfer them from the save game folder to the scenario folder. This will allow "battle in progress" scenarios to be made much easier as a designer could play out a turn or two saving the game as a scenario until just the right one is found.

With Thunderbird I see all 9 images perfectly in both games posting.
With Internet Explorer 3 of them are X
With Edge ALL of them are X.
I am waiting on some kind of explanation from Shrapnel as to WHY this is happening when they are all clear to me on Thunderbird

I'm happy with just that one change. No more artificial permanent curtain which gives TI tanks an even bigger advantage than they already have.

How about now ??
They all show up ( to me! ) in Thunderbird, internet explorer and Edge.
I use Opera 51.0 and they all (I guess) appear just fine.
Awesome changes/updates. IMO the best money I ever spent on a game.
BTW, are single player campaigns going to be affected by this? I have a let's play I am doing and if yes, I better stop it now than play more to have to start a new one.

The only games that are affected by patch updates are Secure PBEM. In some cases campaigns need to be rebuilt because of OOB changes....there *May* be a chance an ongoing campaign could be affected but I'm 99% sure not in a way you would notice.
If you are in the middle of an upgraded campaign the changes would not take effect until your next battle but by then everything would be normalized

That dual mode mini map, showing the lines/change of height, sounds really good. I would love to see a version for the main map. Say press a button and see the other way the map, to see clearer the change of elevation. Next to changing graphics engine and going 3D, that would be a very nice.

Already supported, if you have the full game of course!. I am currently playing at that resolution as it is the native one for my monitor.
The resolution you want is called "desktop".
The fixed resolutions the game offer are legacy 4:3 square aspect ratio resolutions dating back to MSDOS and CRT monitors, or maybe for someone who still has a dinosaur CRT monitor hooked up to their PC. (CRTs still have some uses such as graphics work apparently)
Desktop resolution plays at your current screen resolution, others have played the game with higher resolution monitors.
Desktop is listed at the bottom of the list of resolutions after the legacy 4:3 ones.

I know it is too late to suggest changes in the patch, but can anything be done with the lack of helicopters on the side of the computer in generated battles? I play about 20 years in different versions of Steel Panthers and have never seen computer use a helicopter for transport, attack or reconnaissance. The same happens with the use of paratroopers.

Never seen paratroops used by the AI but it does use attack and transport helos on rare occasions (usually river crossings).

And be aware that unless you allow the AI to buy air assets you'll never see any. It NEEDS air sorties set high to do so
Also, if you want the AI to use airborne units the simplest solution is to set up a generated battle on a large map with the game set up to human purchase P2 but computer deploy......then you buy all the airborne / helo units you want for the AI and let the AO handle them.......it will

I have discussed this in various threads in the past. As Suhiir and Don have mentioned, the AI will definitely use troop carrying helos. I've mostly seen this happen with the Chinese and overall mostly when the AI brings the reinforcements on the board. The mission is universally the same, get to your victory hexes or better yet, a cluster of them. If that's too hard, it'll land them a close as possible to them.
Though it hasn't happened to me, I do get concerned with the Russian AI when I've seen as many as 8 Mi-24 HINDS in the air. It's a very tough helo that I can't discount aren't carrying troops. The manner in which they try to probe my lines, makes me feel there are troops on board them, however, I'll generally after my SAM units have fired at them use unloaded APC's to harass them to move away. And just continue you the cycle until they've been chased off or shot down.
This with no adjusts made to the options menu. I suspect that possibly due to the long duration of my generated campaigns with about 21-27 battles over 1 yr., might somehow affect this mathematically in the game over the course of the campaign. There are personal triggers as a the battles moves along when I feel it might be necessary to pull back some type of APC's to cover my victory hexes, because something just doesn't "feel right".
Good topic and I learned something from it.

Regarding air probably has to be a large force size also. AI definetly does use paras I wrote about it river crossing and virtualy every unit turned up riding a plane or chopper, nasty surprise that.
Makes sense really how often are airbourne troops used, would rather slightly less rather than more than reality.

I had AI turning up with around 8 transport helicopters in an advance USSR-UK (the AI was UK). And it also pops up attack helicopters every now or then, but I think it doesn't buy them often because they are quite expensive. You might see the odd Gazelle with ATGMs, though.

Campaigns ignore your air settings, those only apply to single battles. Air strikes are determined by the campaign code itself, or in the case of user campaigns, what the designer put in for a scenario.

The AI has a preference for heliborne assault in river crossings, since it makes sense there.
Heliborne assault needs a lot of points, and is more likely to occur with armies that have lots of choppers - like Russians, USA but not so much say iraquis.
AI does sometimes buy helicopter transport in meeting engagements, and will tend to bring them in as late reinforcements to try to snatch an objective cluster.
Its easy to figure out how often and at what sort of points these things occur by making AI purchases in the battle generator.
Set the points and battle type and opponents
select auto purchase for both sides
select human deply for both sides
generate the battle
examine each sides purchases in deployment
exit the test game
repeat a sufficient time so that you are familiar with what it does at that points level. then try say doubling points and trying another 20-30 test buys.

It's not just the big guys that buy helicopters. A few years ago, during a US Marines vs North Korea campaign, late in the game got hit with an NK Air Assault company in helicopters descending on the one bridge in the game...after almost all of my troops had crossed it and were chasing the remnants of the NK forces. The air assault landed on my support units, including my A0 unit, which were in the process of crossing the bridge. When the dust settled, lost all my artillery, ammo resupply trucks, air defense vehicles (not that they hit anything ;^), and my A0 unit. When I got done laughing (and cursing Andy and Don ;^), I restarted the game from an earlier round and got to try again. Still the best surprise I've ever had in a computer game. I would say don't change a thing, because AI helicopters do make for a more interesting game.

Why would you reload ?

The A0 unit had died, so the campaign would have been over. I didn't want the campaign to end, as I was only a few battles into it, so I reloaded the game so I wouldn't have to restart the campaign. If it had been a scenario, I would have played it to the end, as I'm curious how the game would play with the A0 unit dead, this was the only time I ever lost one (I usually do a good job of keeping them hidden and out of the way ;^).

Very excited, but haven't got time to install & test it right now.
After this patch, I'm planning to do an extended-combat campaign, with story-like AARs (complete with screenshots, diagrams, and digital painting of battle scenes to help tell the story).
The idea is to command a platoon mech infantry, and as the war goes on he will command subsequently larger formation, company, and then battalion, regiment even. A single day is divided into 4 or 6 battles, with sunshine and weather changing. A single battle could either be very long, thus no time in-between battles (for abstracted non-combat activities like patrols, stand-off shooting, rest in rear, digging in, etc etc). Or battle could be very short, for example to reflect the higher command's intent to capture objective quickly, thus there is in-between time. Supply status will be manually calculated each turn, for example if the random-number-generator (RNG) says NO SUPPLY, weapons have half the normal ammunition count or even lower to none if NO SUPPLY continues for a long time. Vehicles will get lower movements to reflect fuel conservation, etc etc. Isolated/pocketed status will be determined from either RNG or if the rear victory hex is taken by enemy. If the RNG says the troops must fight continually for many days without rest in rear, morale and troop quality will break down; ditto if the troops are isolated, morale suddenly goes lower. Men and equipment might become non-combat casualties due to extreme weather (for example some tanks might be immobilized due to the gasoline fuel being frozen, or some random damage to the Optics or EW, ERA, CIWS equipments). Combat casualties, damage, and experience will carry over and improve, etc. Radio & signal jamming can be simulated at the beginning of each battle, by removing units radios or lower their Rout/Rally rating. And all other things I haven't thought of.
All this is possible by using the D-key while doing Scenario Editing, also the trick of saved-game-turned-scenario, and the Preferences screen, and the User-Campaign string mechanism. Random AI force-pick and deployment could be done using Battle Generator which is then turned into a Scenario. Some automated calculation off-game can be done with my meagre programming skill. But all this will for sure take a huge amount of patience and perseverance, but I hope it'll be very much worth it for anybody visiting the forum and reading the stories.
But for now, it's just in my head, still formulating the abstract operational-rules.
Cheers!

Woah, North Korea has a new tank? Shoot, here I was thinking I could continue to curb-stomp them as America in a 2018 invasion. Ah well, I'll just be wiping my tears with the new Abrams with a freakin' TROPHY system!
For real, this patch was all full of surprises. An Abrams with TROPHY, a Dragoon company, and a bunch of other things I've yet to even notice! Thanks for this. This has gotta' be the best patch yet!

Due to the massive re-organization of the Portuguese OOB Scenhack missed that all the M60's in Scenario 291 had been replaced by an M88A1 Hercules and Scenhack happily reported there were no problems in that scenario and since I do NOT have time go through every scenario in two games manually every release I rely on Scenhack to spot things like this only it's not set up to spot something like this so it let this little oopsie through
There will NOT be a new patch issued for something this minor but for anyone wanting to play scenario 291 at some point this fixes the problem for now and it has gone into next years patch folder as well

I went into the "MOBHACK OOB EDITOR" checked the "USA OOB" and searched for the "B-2" bomber to see if the EW ratings were increased or not (Still the same but, that's fine!!) and instead of the B-2 bomber coming up I got the B-26 MAURDER specifically and in sequence by hitting the ENTER key the following UNITS came up under the B-2 search, in order as follows...132 B-26, 154 B-26K, 355 B-2, 853 B-26, 865 B-26K, 879 B-26, 881 B-26K, 947-949 B-2 and 959 B-29. Again all of this under search for the B-2. Don't know if this is an isolated issue but, I've never seen this happen before.
Over emphasing dialog because I have to ready for work!! No issues in downloading the patch encountered, it was smooth. Also all patches verified prior to download for each of my CD versions of the game. Again NEVER saw anything like this before.

That is how search has always worked (and how it should!)
ie searching for "Cent" in the british OoB will find all Marks of centurions, AVRE, etc
Mobhack

Mobhack searches for a partial string, as explained in Mobhack help somewhere.
Thus "B-2" as a search sub-string will find instances of:
B-2
B-26 Marauder
B-29
etc

Thanks for keeping the game alive and well. It has come a long way since SSI publications. May, I suggest the inclusion of a readme text file in the patch zip file giving installation best practices.
I tried to save scenario #265 as "265 Afghan Wars - A01 Ambush 09/06", but the window only accepted "265 Afghan Wars - A01 Ambush 09/". It appears two characters are lost in the latest patch.
Are my game settings producing the resulting mini-map view?

1/ some sceanrio titles are too long for the game title entry screen but can be manually entered in the CMT a bit longer and they will fit the screen format but simply copying them from one place to another will cut off the excess..... that has been like that for years and has nothing to do with the new patch
2/ how big do you expect a 20x20 mini map to be when each hex is represented by one pixel ?......answer 20x20 pixels just exactly like it would have appeared in any release before this....the large mini only appears when the map is bigger than 100x80 just as we said in the release notes.
What purpose would a readme serve? Everything anyone needs is explained in the installer itself.,
There is only so much we can do to make this clear for everyone and the procedure this year is no different than last year or the year before that.

I used just stop at the first piece of equip. that came up, if it wasn't the (Version of) one I wanted, I'd scroll my way through the OOB until I found the right one. I just would've thought the B-2 would show up first before the B-26. I didn't put it together until I was in the shower that I finally figured out the...
1. UNIT numbers started at the beginning of the OOB in the search to the end of it.
2. They were all B-2 something.
3. I was doing this all with the "ENTER" key - amazing, because never in all these years on purpose or accidentally did that ever happen.
4. OMG how many hours were wasted in my method of searching for UNITS after the first UNIT popped up "wrong" for me over the last 12yrs. almost. The ENTER key my new friend! :o
Thanks everyone!

Pat

Hover the mouse over the find "finger" button by the search entry box, and if you have help on - it will tell you the hot keys for searching in the mouse-over pop-up text. Repeated operations repeat the search again, and searching wraps round at end of file.
So - you can poke away at the "finger" button with the mouse, or press either of F3 or F11 to start or repeat the search. Enter works as well but only if the search text entry box still has focus - not if you have clicked onto another data field on the form.
(I have no idea why both F3 and F11 are active, its buried in the mists of time. Maybe somebody wanted one nearer right hand fingers (F11) or his left (F3)?)

As do I ... and I do a LOT of searching (not near as much as Don tho).
And I find the general search VERY useful at times ... I can say find every "jeep" in an OOB so I can cross-reference them to each other.
DRG

I would not want a "find" feature for OOB's that only found exactly what was typed in. There are times when searching other type documents where exact searching is desirable but not unit and formation names. Something like "B-2" is rather unusual as most names are longer than that with fewer derivatives unless you do a general search for any "squad"

Yes, I found it very handy while testing and for working on maps or scenarios. You can tuck things away near the end of the list and get to nice a quick now. getting to a favorite scenario or map is simple ...all you need to do is remember the number and it works in concert with Scenhacks Scenario Sort feature.........once you find the one you want just enter it in GOTO on the game scenarios page and press enter and you are there

This patch (or previous one) added Weapon 029 (AGS-40 Automatic grenade launcher) to OOB11 - Russia/Soviet Union. For some reason AGS-40 is considered Class 5 (Autocannon) weapon while AGS-17 (Weapon 049) is Class 3 (Team Weapon). Is it a mistake or there is some reason behind it?
