View Full Version : A question for scenario designers only

This question is for active scenario designers
If the game could display nation ID and V-hex flags from non-OOB nations would you use it in scenario design?
Example from a recent query
If you could change Nation ID in ScenHack that would allow a force that included Philippine army units...and have them ID Tagged that way and perhaps also Victory Hexes.....would you use it in scenario design?
Other nation ID's for WW2 could include Brazil, Philippines, South Africa, Latvia, The Cossacks in German service, Mongolia ( fought at Khalkhyn Gol ) Croatia.
If this was an option would you use it?
The reason I'm asking is it's a fair amount of work to do this but if nobody is very much interested it's a waste of our time that could be better applied to other things. You would be creating / using units from existing OOB's but in game they would be Tagged with their own flag

Yes I would.

Hell yes. And since I mostly do scenarios with somewhat forgotten nations, I would praise that A LOT.

Right now this is in the " just a thought.." stage and also at this stage just for SPWW2

I would as well

If this does get done could I ask for a couple of non county flags? Perhaps a "generic Axis" and "generic Allied" flag and perhaps a catch-all "other" flag?

Note I have a scenario conversion that has some Brazilanian units in them Ok

And what exactly would they look like and why would you need them ?

I guess you could need them for a combined force rather than using 1 of the 2 (or more) countries involved.
Perhaps the allied star-in-circle air recognition symbol (white on olive?), Axis is a little harder - Iron cross?
An "Other" flag could be chosen as an alternative to the "rebel" flag in games using same OOB or as non-national units, partisans, International Brigades, etc. Perhaps a "pirate" skull and crossbones?
Just a thought

Is this not just red & green.

Maybe what he was thinking/asking for an Allied/Axis, would be where you have say a mixed force of one or the other. So for example lets say the scenario is in June of '44, and the Allies in this case is the GB and USA versus the Germans. So then the icon is a mixed Allied one of a US and GB flag. Or if it was the FF and USA a mixed allied flag of USA/FF, or if it was a mixed Axis force of German/Italian then German/Italian icon? Not sure if that is what he was meaning or asking or not.
So my thought was he was asking for a one object victory hex flag that had those two flags mixed, but I may be misunderstanding it.

I assume you mean the Victory hex flags not the ID tags.....V hex flags are set by whatever nation is set in for player 1 or player two so those have to be actual OOB's....not the "Phantom" ones proposed but all of this is at the very early stages and is not high on the priority list....there is still much more investigation to be done as to the code interactions as we've never had the need to really dig into that until now so this may end up being only ID tags but V hex flags *may* be possible we won't know what is actually involved until we start work later in the year.....all this thread was for was to see if there was any interest for the people who actually build and post sceanrios and so far there is BUT, as I said...this may end up only being confined to ID tags as the switching from one V hex flag to the other is set by whatever nation you have set as P1 or P2 and that ties in with the Experience and morale code, names, ranks and a host of other things.....that said we won't know what's possible until we get the time to look into it.......this was just to see if there was any interest and there seems to be and *IF* we do go ahead with it and *IF* we can set up the code to change V hexes to the "phantom" nations then so far this is what I have

EDIT..... If this does go ahead the Latvian flag may need to go to pure red and white..so look more like the Austrian Flag with a narrower white horizontal. Right now that Dark Maroon that is actually used can only be recreated with the game palette by alternating red and grey......
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=15502&stc=1&d=1534164616
..... which fools the eye into seeing it as Maroon... but when reduced to wider map views the code struggles with that ( even the best drawing program does ) and preliminary test show it will change to a grey/white/ red flag instead which is not a desirable result
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=15504&stc=1&d=1534164859
so a pure red is better...
and if anyone needs a seed planted for ideas for scenarios or a campaign....the Russians launched six major offensives against the German and Latvian forces cut off in the Courland Pocket and 180,000 Latvians were drafted into the Latvian Legion ( which is why they are included as possibles for this idea)

Very, very nice and understand the digging and what may or may not be possible. Very excited to see if things go proceed.
Like I said I have a Brazilian one, and also that Yugo-Yugo (or Croat) one.

If we do go ahead with it and it does inspire a new scenario or two to use them that will be "a good thing"(tm) All of those could find a use

I also found a more than passable example for "Chinese Warlord" troops

I would like an objective marker that does not change sides. A player does not have a clue if their opponent has occupied the hex, if a taken objective has been retaken by their opponent (unless they leave a force to secure it) or even if they have ownership till the game's end.

*IF* we do go ahead with this I will certainly give these consideration as well but the whole thing is only at the idea phase and low on the priority list
