Always on, auto-rally is the primary duty of my simulated leaders.

Always on.

It never occurred to me to turn it off, so I have always had it on. Would there be any reason or any advantage to turning it off?

OFF would mean the player would be in total control of who gets rallied.

I always try to manually rally units that are in the thick of it, but I also don't want to forget about a formation at the end of the turn (happens to me a lot with 100+ units in my force). So leaving it ON makes more sense to me and allows same control as OFF if I wanted to.

Thanks to everyone who has answered.

The pattern is clear so now I'm only interested in hearing from anyone who does use it set to OFF as SOP

Not against AI. In PBEM, I'd entertain turning the feature OFF

Yes, but I manually rally any unit I want to rally during the turn. Auto rally just makes sure I do not forget to rally someone, alternately I can just let auto rally do the job for all units if I am in a defensive situation and do not want to open fire.
