Did a search of forum and manual. Manual lists a number of units that have a bonus to "Hand to Hand" combat. There is also mention of "melee" combat which occurs only if units are in the same hex. Is this the same thing?

What are the rules for this combat? Does the number of men matter? Morale? Experience? Possession of more close-range weapons (grenades, pistols, molotovs etc.)

Hand to hand combat is, combat with fists, bayonets, machetes, pistols, swords, rifle butts, spears and anything else with a range of 1 or 0. More experienced, better trained units, and melee armed units will be better at it.

That is my understanding of it.

Hand to hand combat is melee combat, when 2 infantry units in the same hex have a go at each other. You will see a message as to "XX men killed in melee" or suchlike as part of the firing process.
