Been away for a long time occupied with the real world. In an effort to regain some sanity, I'm posting a scenario I made two years ago with my 4th Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group series of WWIII in 1985.
This scenario is the follow-on to the "Dirty Patricia's" and covers a Warsaw Pact assault/Canadian Defense, immediately north of the Battle Area in the previous scenario.
Your Opposing Force is comprised of elements of the 1st Czech (CVA) Tank Division. Their objective is to push through defense on their drive to Munich via Rt. 92.
You command Elements of the 4CMBG, including 2 Companies of the Royal 22nd Regiment (the VanDoos) supported by tanks of the Royal Canadian Dragoons. Remnants of the 112th German PanzerGrenadier Bn support your right flank. Your orders are to hold Pilsting to allow other elements to deploy in defensive positons to your rear.
Look at the deployment and the terrain. You'll need to decide where to hold and where to give.
Hope you enjoy
Tom

Fun scenario. The Canada player needs to use a flexible defense.
The HESH rounds range from great to lousy. I guess it is a die roll. I will take Sabot any day. TOWs carried the day.
One quick question: Did you do anything to get the Czech T-72s to lay direct fire smoke? They did it several times. I have only seen them do it in response to being fired at but this was to lay down a smoke screen. The AI may be getting smarter.

I wish I could take credit for that but no, I didn't get that to happen. To be honest, I've played this scenario over ten times in the interim period I designed it to when I posted it, and it never happened for me. But that was under the old version (one pre the current update).
I'll play it again a couple of times and try to replicate that.
Maybe the AI did get smarter...

If you can get a save game for the turn just before that happened it would be worth looking into

Its rare but I have seen this a few times I think during assaults & its pretty good at messing up my sight lines when it does it.
Where other units fired on causing the AI to remain stationary & fire smoke instead of advancing?

AI tanks will occasionally fire smoke in reaction fire - this is not new behaviour. It is just rare that it happens.
I think I have seen it as reaction fire from my own tanks as well, though not sure.
IIRC - it may be more likely as a rection to an ATGM shot.

Unfortunately I did not think to save.
I have seen reaction fire smoke before but this was like Imp described. It seemed intended to lay down a smoke screen before advancing and was not in response to any unit being fired upon. This was also an assault/defend scenario so it is the same type he described seeing it in.
A smarter AI is fun, but I grew up in the 70s and 80s so I fear Skynet and the Cylons if it gets too smart.

They did this without being fired on. It was like you experienced, screwing up lines of sight.
It is what I would expect a human player to do.

There is code in there for the AI to lay down direct fire smoke as well, very rare to see it fire an X-fire smoke screen, but it does happen.

I *think* I saw this happen once but it was long ago ( we get to say that and mean it since the games are 20+ years old now ) and IF I'm remembering it correctly I was surprised because (IF I'm remembering it correctly........) it was a tank firing smoke to block LOS from the enemy to a friendly unit

I have seen it happen a couple of times. Rare but it happens.
