Panzer Scenario Conversions by Zovs66

So a few years ago (when SPWW2 was DOS only) I created 20 scenarios based (as a source) off of the ASL game system.

Recently I found 13 (lost/missing) scenarios in an archive and worked to fix some of them based on feedback from folks and those are posted in the thread “Missing Lost Scenarios” (same with MBT but I had found 54 scenarios).

Doing some of the work for those missing/lost scenarios and getting valuable feedback from folks inspired me to get back into scenario design/conversions.

EDIT (7/16):

So there are now two zip files that cover the official 24 scenario conversions from Panzer to SPWW2 format. These are based off of GMT's Panzer game and all 24 or east front scenarios.

From my perspective, they are fun, fast and a bit furious. I think that primarily, the meeting engagement type of battles is highly suitable for two player PBEM games. I also tried to balance them out as best as possible for two player games and to some extent against the AI (using waypoints). I made notes of this in each scenario and made some recommendations on which side to play if playing against the AI and also against a human.

I think they are all pretty fun and intense little matches and had a blast creating these. If anyone has a go with them, please provide feedback and let me know if there are any glaring holes or if other improvements could be made.

EDIT: (8/2)

Renamed the thread.

So now I have finished up the work on the entire official scenarios (1-34) from Panzer 1, 2, and 3 from GMT Games, these scenarios are in slots 530-563. To round off this series of scenarios from Panzer, I have created six more scenarios (slots 564-569) from various third party contributors to increase or round off the total to 40 scenarios for you playing enjoyment. There are a few more from the '3rd party' contributors I may do in the future, but want to shift gears for some other scenario conversions.

Thank you and good hunting.

P.S. Look for another thread soon on more scenario conversions from other board games. :-)

EDIT (8/8) Added zip file with two scenario corrections 547 and 551. Overwrite with new files in the zip.

EDIT (10/13/2018): Removed previous zip files and created four new zip files which contain all the (previous) corrections.

EDIT (11/5/2018): Added a new Panzer scenario conversion pack (pz-pack-05) this includes ten more scenarios.

EDIT: Removed attachments as they have been updated and placed into the 2019 patch. 3/28/2019

Re: Scenarios by Zovs66

Finished scn 530 - The Crossings: Ukraine.

Played as the Germans. Did not at first understand that there were three bridges to take and that I had a second Pz IV platoon. Burnt too many turns to recover from that, decided to ignore the "northern" bridges and focus on the other two.

The Soviet AI get to the victory hexes first but only in the north do they push across the river. In the south they actually move back and head "north".

The first loss is a Pz IV, followed by the obliteration of the AI tank company during the remaining turns. One crew and the Soviet HQ survives.

I opened the scenario in the editor and noticed you had set waypoints for the AI forces. Good.

German marginal victory.

In a PBEM I would do things in a similar fashion - ignore one Victory Hex row and mass the tanks in hope of taking the other two.

Re: Scenarios by Zovs66

Finished scn 531 - The Village: Poland.

Played it as Germany.

Expected no enemy in the village and raced forward full tilt. Tried to set up defensive positions but the whole thing become a bar fight inside the village. The burnt of the fighting falls on the Pz IV platoon. Tried to finish it without losses but the Pz IV platoon leader is knocked out, and another Pz IV takes a crippling blow. Soviet armour force is destroyed during the end of the game, mainly in the village.

Panther platoon wheels into the village and captures the VHs not under German control. Game ends on turn 14. Found nothing wierd with the map or the AI forces.

Re: Scenarios by Zovs66

Wulfir,

Thanks for your playtesting and feedback! All feedback is awesome and useful. Yes I set waypoints for all 10 scenarios for player two (which just happens to be the Russians in all these cases.

If the community likes them I plan on converting the rest of the Panzer series over to SPWW2. They are fun fast bar fights lol.

I think there are about 40 of these things.

From the old SPI board wargame I have a few 'monsters' but those will take a while to build and test out before they leave the 'shop'. Again many thanks!

Re: Scenarios by Zovs66

Finished Scn 352 - The Crossings Part 2: Ukraine

Took advantage of just having played the original variant of this scenario. Detailed one platoon per objective, reinforced the infantry platoon with the anti-tank guns and the tank company HQ section.

Game ends on turn 12, all VHs taken, no German losses. Twice infantry bumped into point blank range fire from Soviet leg units but took no losses. At game's end the Soviet tank company HQ unit (a T34) had not moved forward and remained on the map along with a couple of trucks and routed leg units.

Found no problems with the map or units.

When I build scenarios I tend to give advantages to the intended AI side - the drawback of that is of course that if played as a PBEM game the scenario favours the player commanding player 2.

Totally agree with that. I designed these to be as evenly matched between two folks and also tried to help the AI out a bit. It's tricky trying to achieve both.

I have played the first 4 scenarios about six times each switching sides to see how it goes. So they should be mostly balanced between 2 folks, but I also tweaked a few things here and there to help the AI a bit.

Thanks again for testing these for me!

Re: Scenarios by Zovs66

Finished scn 532 - The Passing: Ukraine.

Decided to change things up a bit and made this into a small 2 scn campaign. Switched the out the Germans for Hungarians.

Armoured Group Imredy, Hungarian Army

HQ (LtCol Imredy)

Recon Platoon (two MC sections)

Heavy tank platoon (Pz IV section)

Medium Tank Company(-) (75mm Turans, 2 Platoons) (Capt Gabors)

Motorised Infantry Company(-) (Two platoons, mot transport only for Co HQ and one platoon) (Lt Gombos)

Anti-tank detachment (one captured T34, two StuG III, two 76mm AT-guns, two 57mm AT-guns, two trucks)

Motorised Engineer Detachment (Engineer platoon, inf-At section, HMG section, 4 trucks)

AA Detachment (2 88mm Guns – anti-tank role, 2 prime movers)

Turn 0

All troops deployed along the road, roughly where the original scenario's German force was deployed.
Recon plt in the lead followed by the Engineer platoon, heavy tank plt, Company Gabors, Anti-Tank Detachment and the reduced Company Gombos.

88mm AA Guns and one rifle platoon remains holding the two Hungarian VHs at games start.

Turn 1-2

Group moves forward, Eng Plt debus at the corssroads.

Turn 3

Turans near the crossroads take fire from T34s. Enemy mot inf also spotted.

Turn 4-7

Russian tanks advance on the crossroads. Hungarian gunnery not quite up to German standards. One StuG III is lost, one Turan damaged while three T34s and three trucks go up in smoke. Some well placed Soviet AT guns stop Hungarian movement south from the crossroads.

Turn 8-15

With smoke it was possible to blind the AT-guns and dash south to capture the majority of the VHs. I ignored the two VHs in the enemy rear, figuring it would not be enough time to get there without a sort of mad rush forward. The bulk of the Soviet tank force was destroyed in fighting around the crossroads. Hungarian forces took a few more infantry losses and another Turan damaged. At games end the Soviet AI player had one AT-gun and some infantry left in the fight. The remaining AT-gun was never discovered.

The original scenario force value for the German side was 1702 build points. I used 1750 build points for the Hungarian side – I guess their units are cheaper. The Hungarian weapons were not great at range and I think I would probably have doubled my losses if I had pushed on the two Soviet rear VHs when trading fire with the T34s at longer ranges.

Found no problems with the map or Soviet units.

Thanks again Wulfir, cool idea on the mini-campaign. Gives me some ideas...

A "campaign" could simply be a two day battle....Day one then the day after....think of it as an "extended scenario"

Re: Scenarios by Zovs66

Thanks DRG, I got some ideas for some 3-5 day mini-Campaigns. Once I work through some more scenario conversions, I'll circle back and try for some mini's.

Re: Scenarios by Zovs66

I strung the remaining five scenarios together as an improvised campaign - based on date. To be played as Hungary. Core force roughly 1400 battle points.

HQ
Recon Element (Armoured Car Plt, MC Platoon)
Medium Tank Company(-) (Two Platoons)
Infantry Company(-) (Two Platoons, one HMG section)
Anti Tank Detachment (one T34, two Stug, two 76mm At-guns, two 57mm At-guns, two trucks)
Pioneer platoon
Transport Group (5 trucks), i.e. enough transport for one infantry platoon.

No artillery, no AA, no Pz IV.

First scenario scn 537 - Kursk: Assault

Played it through - no problems with the map or the Soviet forces. I did not expect the mortars or the Soviet air and the IL-2s damaged one of the precious StuG IIIs, killed two trucks and some infantry. I was expecting dug in anti-tank guns but found none.

The scenario plays out fine. The Soviet AFV counterattack is directed on the lower bridge area. In a long range shoot-out with the Soviet units I lost one Turan. The counterattack had to be dealt with by flanking fire from the Anti-Tank detachments heavier weapons. One SU-152 was taken out by an infantry section. Medal to that squad leader...

Re: Scenarios by Zovs66

Played through the rest of the scenarios with my Hungarian core force. Found no problems with the maps or the Soviet forces. The attacks/counterattacks by the AI play out fine. I was not able to defeat the SU-85s in the Hube Pocket scenario, ended with a draw...

Oh I must find time to give this a go loved the Hubes Pocket Scenerio in ASL.
Thanks for doing these.

Re: Scenarios by Zovs66

Cool, got 11-13 just about created, there is 24 "official" ones on the eastern front I'd like to complete, and then 25-34 go to the western front and somewhere in there I'd like to make 2 mini-campaigns based off of 3rd Mech Corps (Russians), Ukraine 43-44 (Germans) and a small 2 scenario campaign Brody ('41). I am also building a series of Casino mini campaigns (1 US, 1 Indian and one Polish, all from 2/44 to 5/44). My hopes is that I'll have all 34 of the Panzer scenarios done and 3-6 mini-campaigns done by end of year. I think that after I do the Panzer conversions I will switch to mini-campaigns (2-7 battles per). I like these mini configurations seems like a player can complete one in a week or so (or less).

Re: Scenarios by Zovs66

Hey fellows (and any gals) so I updated the first post with the new scenarios. There are 24 of them in total (thus far), and they all cover the Eastern Front from 1941 to 1945 (mostly 1943 however). They have been converted from the Panzer format into SPWW2 format and the maps are all based off of the SP Camo map generator code with some to a lot of tweaks. They have been designed primarily for PBEM, however I have added way points for the Player Two side and tweaked a few things to help the AI just a little bit without giving the player 2 too much of an advantage.

To me these are pretty fast and furious type of battles and even against the AI you should have a bit of a run. I did try to make them hard for the human vs. AI.

Lastly, I have from these scenarios I am in the process of creating 3 campaigns for them. And I also plan on doing the 10 Western Front ones to make it complete, and make 2 campaigns out of that one.

Feedback is welcome and let me know if there is anything broken.

Thank you.
Don (aka zovs66)

Re: Scenarios by Zovs66

So per the first post in this thread, I renamed the thread and also added in the rest of the Panzer Scenario conversions I have made. This brings it up to 40 total Panzer scenario conversions. All 34 from GMT and 6 third party ones (there are more I may add later on, but want to switch to another board game to convert over).

It has been a blast converting, designed and play testing these. All are fun and pretty fast, ranging from meeting engagements, advances, delays and assaults. All can be played either PBEM or against the AI and I made notes on which side to play (generally if playing against the AI you'll want to take player one). Some of these are hard or were intended to be hard to 'solve'. Great care was taken to make, them as balanced as possible and to assist or help the AI out as well.

If you see or experience any glaring holes or issues please let me know.

Any and all feedback is welcome.

Hope you enjoy...

SCN 547 Beginning of the End.

Suicide mission for the Reds. They are out numbered and out classed by the German forces even before the reinforcements arrive.

were there supposed to be more Russian units?

Not at the moment. Did you use the smoke and arty? When I played through it, I found it tough but I used the smoke to get my guys up there in front of or on the hill picked off the Germans.

I'll test it once again and see if more force is needed. I'd like to re-camo the IVF2's also.

Re: Scenarios by Zovs66

I would advise against getting too carried away re-assigning Icons. ALL of the Pz III's and IV's and their derivatives that used the same hull in both games have been redone for the next patch ( and that is a lot of Icons AND more variations have been added to the files).....so what you are seeing now isn't what you will see after the next release for Pz III's, Stugs, Pz IV, T34, and a number of trucks.. ( and T44, T54/55 T62 in MBT )

Thanks Don on that tip and the new things coming next year. I'll hold off on tweaking too much (the IVF2 are grey in this one, went back time and grabbed em for the scenario and went back forward, the rest of the panzers have the tan or camo colors).

RetLt, there is a slight discrepancies in force value points. I'll investigate further and see if I need to beef up the Russkies.

So a question for you. If I did reassign icon's and they are marked as such in scenhack, if I wanted to reset that what would be the processs? Find the original Icon # and reset it and change the flag?

DRG August 3rd, 2018 07:48 AM

Re: Scenarios by Zovs66

There are three F2's in the OOB's the CS is still grey but the other two are now

https://i.imgur.com/t5eDIFX.png

to change back to the default Icon assigned in the OOB you need to change the column that shows Changed ? Yes/ No in Scenhack to No then save in Scenhack and that will reset the Icon to the OOB default....you need to reload your scenario to see the changes if it's running when you do that

https://i.imgur.com/EXSTnYR.png

I'm not 100% sure that doesn't also reset any other editing you may have done to a unit though. If you simply change the Icon number back without changing the Changed flag it will treat that icon number as the new "custom" one becasue the changed flag tell it it's been changed

Re: Scenarios by Zovs66

Those new IV F2s look really awesome!

RetLT based on your feed back I am re-testing 457, I added a rocket platoon (6 shots) with some ammo dumps for the Russians to see if that would help and took the Germans and let the AI run the attack. So far he killed one of the Marauders, but still has lost a lot of T-34's. After I finish that test, I'll switch sides again and see if I can out smart myself as the Russians. I may change the German tank reinforcements from 90% to a lower number to randomize things. But further test will see if more Tanks are needed for the Russians.

Re: Scenarios by Zovs66

RetLT,

So I added in the Rocket Platoon and supply dump, as well as one more Tank Company with Riders. I am currently on turn 6 with out a loss and without seeing any Germans yet. I have used up all the smoke, and have been hitting the 'suspected' German positions. This and next few turns are the assault. I think adding the rockets will help, and I will play test to see if the extra tank company and riders does not overwhelm the Germans. Also, going to switch sides and see how bad the German position is with these new changes. If it's not bad and the Russians can win. I'll repost and if your free if you can retest that would be great.

Thanks. It's a long story but I had been unhappy with the Pz IV turrets that didn't have the add-on turret armour for a while and this year I decided to redo them and that little snowball turned into an avalanche becasue the hulls were too big and once I rebuilt one with the corrected hull and turret and put them in a test game the Pz III's looked huge so I checked them and sure enough those hulls were too big for the 1 pixel = 6 inches scale as well..so the hulls for those were redone and when the III's and IV's were run in a test game the T34's seemed suspiciously large as well so they were checked and sure enough....too large... so they were redone...along with every vehicle/SP gun built on a PzIII, PzIV and T34 chassis.

"Fun" job......

RetLt,

The AI is not as smart as a human, so I think I'll also need to add some waypoints for the Russians (got them for the Germans). Still need to make one more tweak and then I'll post a corrected scenario.

Again thanks for your feedback, it's valuable!

If Any east African scenarios are built the Brits now have a Wellesley which is too ugly not to love (The Wellesley still holds the record for the longest flight by an aircraft with a single piston engine set in November 1938---11,520.4 km)

There's a campaign in there if it interests anyone. You get lovely maps using Venhola as long as it's not too mountainous

Re: Scenarios by Zovs66

Really like how Venhola makes contours, but still having some user (mine) issues understanding and using it correctly. If someone does make maps, I'll gladly make scenario's campaigns using them.

SCN 551 The Rhino's Horn:

The V-hexes are all 0 VPs. I would suggest making them at least 100 each.

Also the German reinforcements need to have way points set. They were still at the map edge when I encountered them and they stayed there even after first contact.

If the V hexes were zero, the AI reinforcements have nothing to head for, most likely. That will probably be why they sat twiddling their thumbs.

Yeah that is my fault, I buggered up the VH in that one. I fixed it and put in in the first thread.

Again thanks RetLT for the playtesting it helps. Again some scenarios I made hard on purpose, I don't want them to be a cake walk against the AI.

Re: Scenarios by Zovs66

I was cautious the whole way expecting the Nashorns to be behind every tree.

I was getting worried that I missed the label that said "Scenario does not contain any actual Nashorns".

thanks for keeping me busy.

I am playing them in order so no comment from me means everything is good.

The consistent theme to the scenarios is get to the V hexes "Firstist with the mostist" and set up an ambush. This has gotten me DVs in most all of them.

Re: Scenarios by Zovs66

After these 40, things get interesting. Getting a little more creative from experience during conversions, and using my old ASL skills for the next batch of scenarios. Have 7 of 10 just about ready. For those conversions, I'll start another thread, and pop them in packs of 10. Some fun stuff making these newer conversions. Anyway so glad your enjoying and testing.

In my old ASL days, it was said "play-testing is playing" and ditto with scenario design/creation.
