in a related thoughts, I wonder why shrapnel doesn't use box art for the forum logos

But we do. Unless you mean explicitly making the forum logos look like boxes?

That's what I was thinking, or maybe the game's icon. I think, in my opinion anyways, that the ovals hide something that should be easily identifiable with the game.
