Scen 187 Armor Penetration
 
Greetings folks. Sorry if it's already been mentioned, but the German sabot penetration numbers seem way off in the DAK scenario "Meet the Grants," set in May of '42. For example, the 2 SdKfz 251/10's have 12 sabot rounds each, with APCR penetration listed as 8cm, while the 10 PzKw MKIII/PR8's have 15 sabot rounds each with penetration of 15cm(!).

Meanwhile, the Grant has front turret armor of 10cm, but is otherwise listed as 6cm or less, and the Valentine has armored thickness between 7 and 5cm. Yet results against both, with ranges mostly at half or less, were decidedly unspectacular.

On a couple occasions the SdKfz's scored sabot hull hits against Grants at 5 hexes or less with no effect, while the MKIII's fared little better. Basically, it seemed they had to score lucky hits to kill, even though they also had 47 rounds of AP with penetration of 9cm aboard. Mostly the rounds simply bounced off with "no effect."

No big deal, just wondering if it makes sense. Thanks for your kind attention. :)

The scenario briefing text ends with:

These are the 88mm anti-tank guns carried by the gun tractors, and the designer is giving you a hint...

You should also check the penetration data for your guns and ammo with APCalc, if you have not already done so.

Basically - your tanks should manoeuvre to get flank shots on Grants.

Much obliged Andy. APCalc was news to me, and what a marvelous feature it is! Didn't realize how drastically AP and (especially) sabot effectiveness go down as range increases. Another revelation from this marvelous game system. :up:
