Should SP morters be able to move and shoot in the same turn like they can now?

Wikipedia says no.

Is it worth changing so that they are like atgms? This would effect my gameplay because I often use my half-track mortars in a direct fire role after moving in the same turn if a target of opportunity revels itself after the move.

What wiki says is the mortars cannot be fired while on the move. What you said was you use them as DIRECT fire on targets of opportunity that are revealed AFTER you move. They cannot fire or even plot fire the turn they move when the fire is indirect and if they move they loose shots for direct fire so what's the problem ? That MAYBE you can take a shot or two after a move ? We could set that class so that no shots are allowed on the turn it moves but is this REALLY an issue ?

Not an issue really, especially if mortars are used in their proper role (indirect fire).

SP mortars are in a fixed and "ready to go" mounting with recoil buffer etc, so you could fire direct after a quick lay if daft enough to want to do so and hence risk losing the rather valuable but thin-skinned asset.

A "leg" mortar can be thrown together and spew a few random rounds quite quickly at something in view of the crew, but I don't see anyone doing that much at 1 hex a move or so. And a medium mortar is even more vulnerable than an SP mounting. If the enemy is in range - then so are you..

Mortars also get a ROF boost when firing indirect fire, so you really should use them in their proper mode.

And there I was hoping to hear about a new experimental balloon corps, hovering over the battlefield like Puffy the Magic Dragon and spewing forth fire and brimstone with their mortars.

Granted, firing a muzzle-loading mortar from a balloon could be quite tricky.

They are using Balloons again in Afghanistan for surveillance LINK

Spy balloons in Afganistan? Hadn't heard about those.

I guess we won't be seeing those supported in SP:MBT, though modders might be able to approximate them with very slow helicopters.

Nope - just their nickname in the usual intra-unit "friendly rivalry" back in the non-PC 1970s. It may well have come from the name for their drinking and football teams (same thing really).

Probably comes from a concatenation of bampot (Local Scots vernacular, similar to the Irish eejit) + loon, and all rhyming with platoon.

Cheers

I just heard about it a week or so ago and it appears they have been around for awhile just never mentioned.
