looking for a space combat game

I've played Freespace 2, that is so far as I know the best space combat "simulator" yet released, it was released 1999 I belive.
Has there not been any better game in that genre released since then??

Anyone know of a good Space combat game, like X-wing and Tie fighter and Freespace?
Any game that's better than freespace 2?, preferably with the same license as Freespace 2;
When installing the game you get the message that you are free to copy the game for friends and relatives.. that's unusual!! and handy when you want to play multiplayer games with friends who don't have the game.

There has been nothing worth getting that has been as good as Freespace and Freespace II. However Freelancer has its moments, but is otherwise a borning - go get X cargo and deliver to Y planet while defending against attacks. It provides some nice combat, but NOTHING on the scale or control, or enjoyment as Freespace.

Freelancer is okay your first time through but then it becomes boring. However, install a good mod such as Freelancer Rebalance and it can hold your attention for quite some time. And the controls arent that bad, they just require some adaptability. I fly with the keyboard and aim with the mouse, and by bro uses the mouse for both. It all depends on player preference. Personally I kinda like the control setup. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif

Freespace was best played with Joystick Keyboard combination. Oh the dog fights that game had. To bad it was not multiplayer. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Speaking of which, why hasn't some game company taken advantage of MP space flight/flight sims? Oh come on now, a remake of Tie fighter vs X -wing would be awsome. I am sure there are other space fight/flight game sout, ORB - Defiance (?), and others.

The developers released the sourcecode of Freespace 2 to the public and there has been vast improvements to FS2_open, and there are many multiplayer missions now.

But there ought to be some game that rivals it after almost 6 years, shouldn't it??!?
I haven't bought any game for a long time and haven't looked into new games that's been published, so I'd be glad for any tips.

Freelancer, hmm, will look up some reviews.

Freespace was the KOTH and still is. God I miss that game. To bad about Interplay though. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

We should make up some FS2 multiplayer maps based on famous SE4 battles http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Why? The heart and soul have been torn out of the majority of the game industry.

Too true.

There you can find Freespace 2 The Source Code Project(fs2_open) and much more, including a Babylon 5 total conversion of FS2.
I have to agree, Freespace 2 is really excellent. The only other space sim I enjoyed as much is Privateer 2.
Freelancer 2 had its moments, having an especially good atmosphere, cool asteriod fields, and interesting star systems(though the scale was wrong), but the game itself is good for little else than short blow-em-up trips, which is fun only for a little while.

The only space sim I'm looking forward to is X3. What X2 lacked was a good flight model, and hopefully X3 will fix that, along with lots of other improvements.
