Re: Tank machine guns

I believe the T-34 "sight" you refer to is a post-war modification. You'll notice that the sight does not go all the way to the sighting hole in the MG mantlet. I suspect the modification is made to...

Re: Anyone seen or heard anything about this

Yet the Henschel factory February 1944 data reports vehicle speed @ 3000 rpm...:D[/QUOTE]

Yep - no wonder that such a bunch of scatterbrained hippies lost the war :D

Re: Anyone seen or heard anything about this

I can say with some experience that getting "every detail of the weapon/vehicle database correct" to the point someone won't nitpick some detail that doesn't agree with their source is an impossible...

Re: Sometimes you just have to laugh

In theory, but it is probably not that much of an issue for modern western armies, as they are small, conflicts likely to be either short or low intensity and logistics not much of an issue.

I...

Re: Danish TO & E

Came across these, showing the UK 17-pdr anti-tank gun in use with the Danish Army in the 1950ies.

For someone who spends most his time studying WWII, there is something interestingly odd with...

Re: Danish TO & E

The Army is also expecting to update the Leopard 2A5-DK at Krauss-Maffei, 38 tanks in all, The update is supposed to keep them running until 2035. Piranha IIICs are also to be updated to last until...

Re: Normandy 1944

With performance like that, you wonder why they ever bothered developing nukes.... :)

Frankly, I think statements like this: "In one episode where Bletchley’s code-breakers played a vital role,...

Re: Firing a German Pak-40 75mm Anti Tank Gun

Probably just a matter of size. Once anti-tank guns grew to 75mm and beyond, concealment was a one-shot affair. Size and firing signature (debris and muzzle flash) would probably rule out any chance...

Re: USA: Early M4 hulls with L40 gun?

This might help (from Hunnicutt):

The difference between L/37 and L/40 is the difference between measurements C and...

Re: MBT's

You forgot the 50mm range (German 5cm guns, British 6-pdr) :)

It could be argued, that in terms of caliber, not much have happened since the 1950ies. After all, British, German and US tanks all...

Re: Mounted infantry shooting

I think it is the other way around. When the Panzergrenadiers aquired APCs, it was seen as transport only. Hence its early designation as "Gepanzerte Mannschaftkraftwagen" (litt. armoured...

Re: 10.5cm K gepanzerte Selbstfahrlafette IVa (Dicker Max)

"Encyclopedia of German tanks..." article for the vehicle has 132mm vs 0 degrees and 111mm vs 30 degrees at 2000 meters. Ammo not specified. Appendix in the same book has similar figures for the same...

Re: Tigers vs Shermans

The fundamental problem with this argument is that the Tiger was not designed specifically to fight other tanks :)

If you look at the earliest speculations on the subject of a heavy tank back in...

Re: Saukopf

According to Spielbergers book on the StuG "...from 1944.." and according to Jentz in his Osprey booklet on the StuG "...Topfblende had been introduced in mid-1944.."

For the 7,5cm armed StuG, the...

Re: Minimal range for indirect artillery fire?

The two German infantry guns - the 15cm and the 7,5cm were used in much the same way as mortars would later be. Their design was based on WWI experience with mortars - "Minenewerfer" - and the two...

Re: US OOB 12 corrections/suggestions (v.6)

The jet is not the problem - it is the huge bang when the HEAT round goes off. While part of the explosive force is directed, the rest is not. The secondary effect is considerable.
German tests vs...

Re: US OOB 12 corrections/suggestions (v.6)

Problem with sandbags is that it works something like ERA - i.e. it protects against the first hit, but is blown apart and away, leaving the tank with only the main armour to deal with the next...

Re: Sd.Kfz. 252 LGM

According to Spielbergers book on the StuG, it was part of the requirement for the SdKfz 252 that it carried one MG that could be mounted on an AA-mount.

That could be the origin for the...

Re: US OOB 12 corrections/suggestions (v.6)

IIRC the US tank formations in Tunesia were temporarily issued vehicles from Lend-Lease stocks in North Africa after the Sidi-bou-Zid/Kasserine debacle in February 1943. If memory serves me right,...

IIRC "sabot" is sometimes used to represent rounds with very limited performance like the AP used in the French 37mm tank gun. Something about the performance of normal AP dropping off in a liniear...

Is it max. range...
