Re: thermal imaging...

Thanks folks. Your solutions sound pretty sensible, although easier said than done. What may have thrown me off is that in this scenario pounding the ridge with arty can be counterproductive. While...

Re: thermal imaging...

--Spoiler Alert--

Really. If you want a challenging scenario in which the enemy have TI and you don't try #179, The Bear Strikes (WP), a Soviet assault battle. Tried it several times; even after...

Re: Question on infantry SAMs

A bit off-topic, but in WINSP are targets moving ACROSS the firing unit's LOS more difficult to hit than those moving directly towards or away from them? My impression was that target size. speed and...

Re: Any Wreck Limit to Vision?

Thanks guys. The "flaming wreck" icon clears up any ambiguity. None appeared in the WW2 scenario mentioned above but showed up in an ongoing MBT battle. Certainly not all, or even most tanks marked...

Re: Any Wreck Limit to Vision?

Fair enough. Yet it will take some getting used to. Imagine going from an environment where single wrecks block all unassisted LOS to where five wrecks in successive hexes may not block it at all....

Any Wreck Limit to Vision?

Reason I ask is 'cuz there seems to be almost unlimited vision through wrecks. In this example (from Scenario 94 with visibility of 48) four wrecks do not block LOS between the R-35 and the T-34s at...

Re: AP vs Bunker/Pillboxes

It was in Kurland, Latvia in October of '44. The armor rating for the PBs was (front, side rear):

Hull-10, 20, 22
Turret-3, 22, 24

Only one tank definitely had a side/rear shot from just...

Re: AP vs Bunker/Pillboxes

Sorry again to resurrect an old thread, but in a Russian LC battle T-34/85s with max pen of 16 took out two pillboxes with side and rear thickness of 22 on the first or second shot. Not that I'm...

Re: Just quickly someone I am proud of

Nice going. Please give my regards to Hauptmann Schaub for a job well done. He must be extremely relieved to have gotten out of the Normandy and Fatherland defense campaigns unscathed, what with the...

Re: New player seeking instructional PBEM game opponent

Sorry can't help you out with PBEM. It's beyond my feeble digital capabilities or inclinations. But with modest experience at SPWW2, SPMBT and a cursory glance at some Combat Mission videos (Armchair...

Re: Optional game rules

Couple questions:

1) Can infantry advance toward tanks or other AFVs at the risk getting shredded? This will soak up shots but not with impunity.

2) What do you mean by "support units" in...

LC Large Infantry Squads

The Russians start out with 13-man infantry squads for Barbarossa (June '41).

1) Do these squads automatically downsize to 10 men later on, or must that be done manually with the "Change"...

Re: Counter battery fire question

FWIW--and at risk of flogging this dead horse--a recent assault battle had my 122mm battery firing within the first 10 turns and scoring 7 hits on the German 10.5cm battery. Then switched it to...

Re: Counter battery fire question

Somewhat off-topic, but are off-map arty considered dug-in for assaults/defenses? If so, then isn't it unlikely that anything smaller than 155mm will do any appreciable damage? Thanks for your kind...

Re: Campaign thunder in the sinai"

--Spoilers?--

Been awhile but IIRC you gotta select targets carefully with ATGMs, waiting until they're in half or quarter range and use smoke to block off LOS to more distant targets. Ditto for...

Re: Counter battery fire question

OK thanks. But why didn't the Russian 122mm battery respond to subsequent fires later on?

Re: Counter battery fire question

Early in a Russian LC battle (turn 3 or 4 IIRC) a recently upgraded 122mm battery (experience 88) fired off-map CB against one of three German 10.5cm batteries, scoring one hit. For quite a few turns...

Re: How do you cross attach platoons?

You can only do it with generated battles or campaigns, during the deployment phase (turn zero). The game manual tells you how. My impression is that it's useful for creating more rally opportunities...

Re: Red Dawn #263 Antonito

Don't worry about it. It's too trivial to bother. Please relax and enjoy the holidays. Thanks for everything you've done this year, years past, and (I hope) the next. Cheerio.

Re: Daunted by Long Campaign force selection

With the Russians there doesn't seem to be anything between the 76.2mm battery and the 107mm battery, and if range is king then the 122mm battery at 210 hexes outclasses them all, even the 203mm...

Re: Red Dawn #263 Antonito

Can't recall, too smokey to see the action. Anyway AA0 is on hex 45,33 and was already listed as destroyed by turn 21. There's a Besatsung, AA5, located at 39,36 on most end-of-game maps (results...

Re: Soviet OOB 11: miscellaneous observations

Also - if the battery has 200 range then it can drop fires anywhere on the map.

If however the off-map battery had less than 200 range then range is calculated as if they were at -1,-1 resulting...

Re: Red Dawn #263 Antonito

Germany was/is Player #2 in the campaign. The Russian player (me) hasn't been getting full points for abandoned enemy vehicles and arty pieces. Here's the last-turn save (slot 52) for battle #14; hit...
