Re: OT: V The TV Series

Man, this topic brings back memories. The two miniseries were definitely better than the TV series, or perhaps I should say, less bad. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif I...

Re: OT: An Open Letter To George Lucas

Dear Fanboy,

Considering how much of my merchandise you've already bought, I couldn't care less if you never spend another penny on the Star Wars franchise.

In other words, so long and thanks...

Re: OT: I know how to solve global warming

From Will:

"Doubt away, but I believe the part that "sickened" alarikf (and myself as well) was the part where untrained and uneducated individuals attempt to dominate debate on the issue, on...

Re: OT: I know how to solve global warming

From alarikf:

"Useful citations for above referenced philosophers:"

I read the Popper references, and I think I see the source of our confusion. From the Wiki article:

"Logically, no number...

Re: OT: I know how to solve global warming

From Will:

"The majority of scientists who are studying climate are saying that humans have had an impact on climate, but they don't go saying it's the end of the world either. That's what...

AT, I saw that episode of South Park. If you hold in your farts, you spontaneously combust. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Starhawk, make sure you do all that driving & slapping & kicking on the third day, or you'll spend your last two days in jail. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Renegade, my apologies for stomping on your points, some of which (OK, many of which) you made better than I did. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Ah. I think I understand the fundamental problem here.

Re: OT: I know how to solve global warming

Whoa! Nice rants from alarikf. I'm less ambitious, so I'll try to be more brief. (Edit: I failed. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif )

First, I have no hard feelings...

Re: OT: I know how to solve global warming

As ToddT has hinted, if you want to decrease solar radiation reaching the earth, increased emission of aerosols is a lot easier and cheaper than building orbital sunscreens. Recall that the...

Re: OT: I know how to solve global warming

Renegade, it's difficult to correlate the rising prevalence of asthma in the US with rising pollution because air pollution has in fact been decreasing for some 30-odd years:

Re: Sword of the Stars? (New 4x game apparently)

Well, the "ooooo.... shiney" aspect may capture the impulse buyers, but it wears off pretty fast when, like DarkHorse and me, you're trying to figure out how combat works and the game just isn't...

Re: Sword of the Stars? (New 4x game apparently)

Actually I'm ambivalent about SoTS. The strategic side is a bit too abstracted for my taste, as I mentioned in the "Sins of a Solar Empire" thread. A good tactical game could make up for all the...

Re: Big ship supremacy... Can little ships keep up

The fact that Space Empires models speed, not acceleration, suggests that the method of propulsion is entirely non-Newtonian, e.g. a slower-than-light version of the "stutterwarp":

Re: OT: Sen Toku

The 100m depth figure for the Sen Toku subs is also reported in Black_Knyght's original reference. Given the unique requirement of pressure-proofing an aircraft hangar and its large hatch(es), 100m...

I saw that movie!

Suddenly, Tony Curtis pops up next to him and shouts, "I'm Aaron!"

Then all the guys around them jump up and...

Re: Space Vikings

Well, there were the two Viking missions to Mars, and IIRC some satellites were launched in the 60's using Thor IRBMs as boosters. Overall, though, the Norse have been overshadowed by the Greeks and...

I haven't used assault shuttles in the demo yet, but my understanding is that they're only useful for planetary bombardment. Apparently planets never surrender, even to another faction of their own...

Just out of curiosity, what do you find disappointing about SotS? I'm ambivalent about it myself, wishing it had: more than three ship classes; more than just the single abstracted "planet" per...
