Browser - Opera (long time zealot - since v.5).
Mail - The Bat (great filtering capabilities, virtual boxes, etc).
IM - QIP (small, not a bloated one, just works).

Disassembler is a little help when you're REing VB p-code.
Good decompiler might help a bit more: VBD (http://www.vb-decompiler.org/index.php?p=Products).

UM, you may find VBScript suitable for your task, since you're familiar with QBasic.
And VBScript's natively supported in Windoze via WSH without compilation bothering.

Disabling font AA has no effect for me, unlike updating Catalyst from 6.8 to 6.12 (gave a 6X fps boost in 1.25 demo).

SE5 AI is just a set of rules "If X happened then change state to Y and do Z". You're demenading it to act like a human, though. SE5 AI is indifferent to its past decision and not evaluate complex...

The game engine definitely needs serious optimization. Seriously, Heroes 5 and HL 2 run faster on my computer than SE5.
