Actually you can lan by direct connection. In fact that was the original method (MAN Im old!). Anyway there are ways to do it. And the similarity of IPs is only if they agree on some machine to set the numbers for the lan instead of putting them in directly.
It is a fact however in many of the forums on Shrapnel that the biggest confusing factor about MP play is the difference between a lan ip and an internet IP. Keeping WhatIsMyIP.org handy is a good thing. I dont bother explaining the whole thing to people. I just tell them that site is showing what it sees you as from the internet, so anyone else on the net needs to use it to reach you.
