LBM - an old Atari (or was it the Amiga?) format actually. See also ILBM and IFF file formats.

Feel free to do your own picture project, but try not to make the usual mistake some folks do by going for colour as a replacement for the B&W pics. Some other folk have already done so in their own picture projects.

The Colour LBMS are used strictly outside the game proper on intermediate screens where the palette is not being rotated. Attempts to replace the normal black and white palette with colour pics will have "swimming" or "flashing" pictures in the active game - e.g. if the encyclopaedia is brought up.

In the active game, some colour numbers (and/or RGB values) are used for animations (Smoke, fires, waves) and are rotated to cause animation effects as the game map is repainted. We don't publish that info - but if you intend to use colour you will have to use substitutes (or avoid completely) certain reds, yellows, and whites amongst others. Or it may be certain colour numbers of the 255 in the palette - I forget since it has been over 5 years since I looked at the palette shifting code.

Cheers
Andy
