I have windows 7 and if I run a older game in Compatibility Mode then it mostly works (ya some game will not be able to run) but most of the games will here's a website that will help ya

Oh DON'T get Windows 7 Home Premium you WON'T be able to play any older games
get Windows 7 Professional it WILL run the older games

I got the Windows 7 Ultimate because it was only $25 more then Pro so i got it
