DirectX 8.1(4.08.01.0901)
It's good to know at least there is hope!
Mobhack- you are right sysadmin here take a dim view of games, but I managed to wrangle admin rights for my machine.
The splash screen DID come up before the errors.
I ran the DirectDraw tests, and everything was OK.
But, I got these lines in the dxdiag output:
DDraw Status: Not Available
D3D Status: Not Available
AGP Status: Not Available
DDraw Test Result: All tests were successful.
So the tests were successful, but DDraw is "not available"?
What do I need to do?

Weird.
The DirectDraw module of DirectX is required, IF you want to play the game in DirectX, that is.
As a wild guees, those strange results may be because of a corrupt DirectX installation. If you download the DirectX installer from Microsoft (If you dont have it on a CD) and reinstall then it may fix itself?.
Now, as far as I know nobody has runthe game in GDI mode on a machine without DirectX as it is on 100% of all windows machines these days. That box though, looks like a prime candidate to test the
GDI Windowed mode on
So - input as to whether it worked in Windowed GDI mode (or not!) would be
most welcome.
Cheers
