Please tell me this is a spoof?

OMG they can't seriously be considering something so slow and ungainly, can they?

Looks like it's trying to make the enemy laugh themselves to death.

Oh well, maybe it's good in transporting heavy stuff but doesn't look to be designed with beach assaults in mind.

I'd be interested to know what the ground pressure for that is. Not only do the treads serve to move it through the water but I'm betting the ground pressure is very low. For moving cargo in a non combat situation its an interesting concept

As a cargo vehicle I suppose it could have some application.

Yep, I've never personally had any issues with concept aircraft/vehicles/weapons. It's when something less then effective/useful (2 inch mortars for instance) are adopted wholesale I get a bit annoyed/concerned.

The one in the video is a half-scale demonstration machine that was showcased at RIMPAC this summer. This is a real project with real applications and apparently the Marines and the Navy are somewhat excited about it: http://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=82174

Given the volume the thing takes up with those oversize tracks and the potential cargo capacity of the main body I don't see it as remotely practical. One thing designers HAVE to keep in mind is US Navy amphibious warfare ships only have so much space and tonnage available for vehicles and the hatches are just so big. While it's of course possible to redesign and build ships to accommodate about anything it's VERY unlikely.

I would guess the Office of Naval research knows how much space is available on a USMC amphibious warfare ship...

Quote:
The full-scale UHAC will be able to carry the equivalent of three M1A1 tanks, or cargo weighing up to 200 tons, at speeds of 25 miles (40 kilometres) per hour.

It will ultimately be 84 feet (25 metres) long, 34 feet (10 metres) high and have a range of 200 miles (320 kilometres).
