Default Designating Target Type?

When raiding a port and being confronted with an enemy task force, can you designate the enemy task force as the target instead of the port?

Example: During my initial raid on Pearl Harbor a U.S. Carrier task force showed up. I would prefer to engage the Carrier task force, but my attacks were directed against Pearl Harbor instead.

No. You can't designate targets. The game AI does it for all types of combat.

Also, the first turn's raid on Hawaii is a special case combat, in that only two combat turns are completed, and those are against only the ships in port, and only air power is used...no surface action.

Some may not like being not able to target specific ships, but for me, I like the decision not to include that option.

I do notice that most of the attacking planes and ships do go for the most important targets, but sometimes not and that makes for a more interesting and random game in my opinion.

Good comment. Also, some of the 'historical' aspect of the game would be lost if players could target specific ships. Even when an air squadron may have been given orders to attack certain ships or types, they weren't always successful at finding and/or identifying what they were sent for. After playing the game so much, I do agree that not having that kind of control makes for a better game.

To be clear, I was not asking whether I could attack specific targets (i.e. choose which ships to attack). I was asking whether I could identify the TASK force as the target instead of the Base when a task force appears in the same zone as the base.

I take it the answer is no to my original question. I just want follow-up readers to know that the answers in the past few posts are not addressing the original question, even though the answer appears to be the same for both.

OTGamer,

Your aircraft will automatically target the enemy task force, if it's in range. Otherwise it will go after the base (the enemy ships pose a greater threat to your own ships than the base). Usually that means your bombers will go after any TF you see on the screen, but sometimes if the enemy decides to withdraw, they may be out of range but still visible for a round or so of combat.

Thanks,

John Hawkins

PS: sorry for taking so long to reply, we've had some weather issues up here in the Pacific NW.
