The T-44 was available at the end of WW2 but never used in combat and why it appears in MBT at the start .... I have no idea what tank you might be thinking of but it's not the T-44

I did a quick look in the encyclopedia (sp?), and there is a version available in 1946-1953. I didn't look at the difference

There are actually four
1/ T-44 1946-1953
2/ T-44 1954-1960 ( more sabot + upgraded gun )
3/ T-44M 1961-1965 ( increased ammo storage )
4/ T-44S 1966-1975 ( two-plane gun stabilization )

Fallout Re: T-44

Well as they're partnered (And have been.) with the
"Ontario Regiment Tank Museum" this also has made me feel "better" about these guys including the fact I can easily verify their data. What I like best is that they cover the "lesser" known tanks and by Russian standards I guess you can say the T-44 falls into this category when the production number was "only" ~1825 units as compared to it's successor, the T-54 at ~35,000 units which were produced.

Three things caught my attention first the issue that the T-34/76 had with it's sloped armor deflecting rounds into the turret ring. It seems this happened more than "once in awhile" and made for a real bad day for the crew. Also that the DDR operated them (Though it should be pointed out, that the DDR was the ONLY country besides the USSR, to operate the T-80 within the Warsaw Pact.) and finally how secretive the Soviets were concerning this particular tank during most of it's service life.

So I hope this information will be useful and informative.

The second ref. well, they built them. Now located in the Ukraine.

Pat
