Default Commander casting order

I know that the commanders cast spells in combat in the order they are displayed on the strategic display / army setup, but can this order be changed in anyway, and if not, is there any logic behind the order?

No it cannot be changed. The logic is that they are processed according to (hidden) unit number order. I do not think the feature will ever be changed.

Oh

Í guess reverse communion will be at it's best only when you get lucky with commander order then...

That is right. Lucky/unlucky commander order will definitely impact your communion design.

Note: If you happen to have mages from separate but close by provinces (X and X) with a common province that they can all reach (Z), you can temporarily direct them all to Z, and press 'y' and you will see the commander order they will have if attacking as a group. Unfortunately, there is no way to see where any teleporters will line up in this group but that has helped me set up communions in the past where mages from different directions were attacking the same province.
