Smile Special Forces/Units in Campaign games

I realise this is probably old news, but how does the game cater for special units operating behind lines when playing campaign games. I know you do it through the placement of reinforcements when creating a scenario, but can't do it when playing a follow-on scenario in a campaign.

I have been playing Steel Panthers for years (since it was still the original Steel Panthers)and really love playing the long campaign. I wanted to bring some special force units (SAS) into my force-mix, but it seems pointless if they can't approach a target from behind the setup line. They could just as well be normal infantry...

I'm hoping I'm missing something and there is an easy way to do this. Thanks

you aren't missing anything, afaik - outside scenarios all troops (except para / glider borne types) set up behind your start line.

Remember "behind the lines" is by definition not the "front" (Forward Edge of Battle Area, etc) where the action and the game is taking place, but an all together quieter corner of the world.

Unless your campaign focuses on the deep reconnaisance / raids carried out by the SAS and other "special forces" you probably wouldnt have them in the mix of standard units.

The units themselves do exist in the OOB and are "normal infantry" (albeit with enhanced morale and experience levels) - to have them "approach a target from behind the setup line" you will need to drop them by parachute or glider - or walk them there!

Unless you build you own campaign and by them as reinforcements so you can place them anywhere they just deploy as standard forces.

What he said.

As for the walking, make your games long enough in duration and you can afford giving your special forces a good number of turns to sneak past the enemy lines before the main attack starts (on advance or assault scenarios).

If you are playing with large enough map, there should be some routes where they could infiltrate through relatively easily, if they manage to find them.

In a combat situation including special & regular forces the specials would not normally participate in combat anyway or would have a specific target. There far more valuable role is information gathering.
