Default British OOB 7 Corrections/Suggestions

1. The British didn’t use a carbine (weapon 006) until 1944. The Lee-Enfield No. 5 Mk. I Unofficially known as the Jungle Carbine. Could call it Carbine No.5

Early war British HQ unit 244 could have its carbine changed to a Thompson SMG.

2. The Staghound AA (unit 163) with open turret has top armour.

3. The infantry Vickers K HMG (weapon 143) should be changed to a LMG and range lowered to 600yds and HEK raised to reflect 950rpm RoF.

Commandos didn’t use the ‘K’ with a tri-pod, it was used with a bipod. They used the ‘K’ with bipod, sometimes instead of Vickers HMGs when they wanted to travel light.

4. The Vickers K Twin AAMG (weapon 135) could also have higher HEK to reflect 950rpm RoF x2. Could lower range to 24 to match other 30cal AAMGs

About the Thompson in the pre 1941 HQ: I was always under the impression that the British only ordered Thompsons per Lend and lease AFTER the experience of the 1940 campaign. Before that, NCOs and officers carried pistols.

You may well be right. I know for a fact that even Home Guard units had the Thompson in March 1941, which is three years earlier than the carbine, but I'll look into this and post what I find.

I found an unverified reference to the 1st Guards Brigade receiving a few Thompson SMGs in France in Feb 1940 and wider distribution by June 1940

Here’s a British Thompson Training pamphlet from 3rd July 1940, which was distributed to Guards Battalions, et al, as you can see below:

The British OOB only has two HQ units:

1930 – Dec 1942
Jan 1943 – 1946

It doesn’t make sense for the HQ unit primary weapon to be a pistol all the way until 1943.

A third HQ unit could be made from 1930 – Jun 1940, but the war doesn’t really start for the British Army until May 1940.

This game already takes many OOB liberties in the 1930s with vehicles and weapons, and I’m fine with that, it’s primarily a WWII game. 1930s scenarios can model units and weapons according the precise date if they want.

As far as WWII is concerned, to give the early HQ a Thompson rather than a Carbine solves the discrepancy for most of the war, and is easy to change.

cheers,
Cross
