Default The next thing...

I love dom 3 and all, but the thing is, I have played it for a long time, and well, I want something new.

My personal dream is that the makers of domminions 3 gets to build a true sequal to master of orion 2 I dont ask much, just a space game based on a remake of the domminions combat enigne and a 4x space game with the same
level of content as dom 3.

So, does anybody know if they have any projects going on (except adding to domminions 3?)

There is a mysterious new project. It's not dominions 4, but there have only been a few hints as to what it actually is.

I doubt it'll be science fiction, but that's just a guess based on their known interest in mythology.

An RPG in the domminions setting

In the meantime, I have a proposal: Domminions, the miniature game! Small plastic figures and dices...

Dominion-mon, gotta catch'em all!

Nice selling point. Get kids to collect over 2000+ dominion-mon plastic figures to unheard prizes.

I think the Dominions 3 magic system would be awesome for a pen+paper RPG. The Jack Vancian D&D systems always bug me, as do the existing alternatives. A system where a spellcaster starts with levels in various paths, and at each character level gets 2 levels in magic schools (so at level 20 they would have most, but not all, of the magic, assuming 7 schools with 9 levels each), would be very intriguing.

On the other hand, a skill based system is just perfect for something like this. Fudge had something called the 5 by 4 system, with levels in verbs(create, destroy, etc.), and nouns (energy, matter, spirit), and combined the two. Dominions 3 has an infrastructure for research levels and magic levels in each path, and works fine with the same concept for characters. Add in skills for attack, defense, maybe morale, keep the item system, and you have it. Of course, there are the obligatory physical skills, the less obligatory social skills, and the completely avoidable mental skills, but you are basically golden out of the gate with a skill based system. You could even have magic work off empowerment for point costs.

A game called DragonQuest, originally by SSI, later acquired by TSR and quietly buried after an abysmal 3rd edition (2nd Edition was great) would work very well for a Dominions campaign. It would require a magic system conversion and I toyed with that at one point but it was a bit much work. Kaljamaha worked a lot more on it, but I'd need to check our notes on where we got. Dominions monsters are very easy to translate from Dominions to DQ format. A lot of them are tough and scary and the various unique summons like Elemental Royalty are, in DQ, basically a free-roaming apocalypse. You either get the hell out of their way or you die.

DQ has a skill based system that in my opinion works better than anything else I've seen, though it starts to break down at the higher end of magical skills because those go so high. The system is not the easiest possible to pick up, it has a pretty steep learning curve and probably requires a couple of thoughtful readings of the basic mechanics before it starts to click.

You can find DQ on Google Groups, there are a couple of mailing lists and the actual game manuals plus a couple of user-made add-ons that I'd highly recommend.

My understanding is that a lot of the Dominions magic system was borrowed from Ars Magica, which has a similar system of combining a small selection of verbs (e.g. Conjuration) with a small selection of nouns (e.g. Death) to create spells and effects. A lot of the other concepts were carried over, like gems, searching for magical sites, magical empowerment, spell research, and item crafting & boosters. Oh, and Ars Magica also had the concept of Dominions. So there was a Fairy Dominion, a Christian Dominion, etc. where magic is weaker or stronger, and various other effects hold.

All that being said, Dominions III is the better game. Ars Magica had a lot of character and was very interesting, but I'm not sure it really works for most RPG groups.
