I'm wondering if is there an easy way to put your icons into the game?

Perhaps...

You could ask someone to post their shp files after they've been edited, that would be an easy way to add icons to the game. I may post some edited shp files, but not yet.

One of the problems is that soft vehicles from different nations sometimes share the same generic truck icon. So if you replace a generic icon with a nation specific icon, all the nations that used the original generic icon will now have the custom icon.

Soviet ZiS Heavy Trucks

Picture of ZiS trucks

Current:
ZiS Truck....unit 45....carry 32...size 4...4x2.........spd 15
ZiS Truck ...unit 466...carry 24...size 4...4x2.........spd 12
ZiS 42.........unit 301...carry 18...size 3...Halftrack...spd 18

The three ZiS vehicles have an identical body, only the drivetrain and speed should be different (like the GAZ trucks but the ZiS are larger).

Top down picture of GAZ and ZiS trucks

Recommended changes highlighted:
ZiS-5 Heavy Truck......unit 45....carry 24...size 4...4x2........spd 60Kmh
ZiS-6 Heavy Truck......unit 466...carry 24...size 4...6x4........spd 55Kmh
ZiS 42 Hvy Halftrack...unit 301...carry 24...size 4...H-track... spd 45Kmh

ZiS Truck Unit 45
1. Could change name to ZiS-5 Heavy Truck (over 1,000,000 produced)
2. Could change carry from 32 to 24 (unless this causes OOB problems)
3. May want to tweak speed (ZiS-5 speed: 60Kmh)
4. Could create new icon (same icon as unit 466)
ZiS-5 size: 239 x 88 inches

ZiS-5 sources:
http://www.autogallery.org.ru/zis5s.htm

ZiS Truck Unit 466
1. Could change name to ZiS-6 Heavy Truck (21,239 produced)
2. Could change from 2WD to 4WD
3. Adjust speed (ZiS-6 speed: 55Kmh)
4. Could create new icon (same icon as unit 45)
ZiS-6 size: 239 x 88 inches

ZiS-6 sources:
http://www.autogallery.org.ru/zis6.htm
http://www.o5m6.de/zis_6.html

ZiS 42 Unit 301
1. Could change name to ZiS-42 Heavy Halftrack or ZiS-42 Halftrack (5,931 produced)
2. Could change carry from 18 to 24
3. Could change size from 3 to 4 (ZiS-42: 240 x 93 inches)
4. Could change speed (ZiS-42 speed: 45Kmh)
5. Could create new icon (same as icon as unit 45, 466 but with tracks)
ZiS-42 size: 240 x 93 inches

ZiS-42 sources:

Additional Heavy Truck

The YaG-6 Heavy Truck may make a useful addition to the Soviet OOB because it would give the Soviets a truck that could carry about 32 men.
To avoid ‘carry 32’ OOB problems with unit 45, perhaps it’s possible to change unit 45 to a YaG-6, then create a new ZiS-5 with carry 24?

YaG-6 Heavy truck 5 ton
Made: 8,075
Available: 1932
Drive: 4x2
Size: 256 x 98 inches (size 5)
Speed: 40Kmh

Soviet Ammo Trucks and Barge Carrier

Soviet Ammo Trucks

Ammo Truck...unit 230...Light Ammo Truck..size 2...4x2...Avail until 12/41
Ammo Truck...unit 332...Med Ammo Truck...size 3...4x2...Avail from 1/42

The Soviets have two ammo trucks available. A size 2 available until Dec 1941, and a size 3 available from Jan 1942. Both ammo trucks are 2WD.

One possibility is to make both available for the whole war.

The size 2 could be a GAZ-M415 light truck, small and quite fast (about speed 22).
The size 3 could be a GAZ Medium Truck 6x4, a bit slower (speed 18) but 4WD.

Ammo Truck unit 230
Currently:
Available until 12/41
Size: 2
Speed: 15
Drive: 4x2
Crew 2

Possible changes:
1. Could make available until the end of the war, or 1946
2. Could give this unit a light truck icon.
Current icon looks like a size 4 truck.
Could use a GAZ-M415 light truck icon.
3. Could give this truck the GAZ-M415 speed of 90 Kmh

Ammo Truck unit 332
Currently:
Available from 1/42
Size: 3
Speed: 18
Drive: 4x2
Crew: 2

Possible changes:
1. Could make available from 1935
2. Could give this unit a medium truck icon.
Current icon looks like a size 5 truck.
Could use a GAZ Medium Truck icon.
The speed of this unit is already correct for a GAZ medium truck.
3. Could make this truck 4WD

This would give the Soviets a choice of ammo carrier: Small and quite fast; or medium size, a bit slower, but 4WD.

Barge Carrier unit 248
Currently:
Avail: 1/30
Size: 6
Speed: 10
Drive: 4x2
Crew: 6

Could make this Barge carrier a YaG-10, 8 ton, 6x4 truck.
The Yag-10 is a bit longer and narrower than the YaG-6.

The 8-ton YaG-10, built at the Yaroslavl state motor vehicle plant (»YaG« or »YaGAZ«) from 1931 on, was for long the heaviest truck of the Soviet Union.

YaG-10, 8 ton, 6x4
Available: 1931
Made: 333
Speed: 40kmh
Drive: 6x4
Size: 275 x 92 inches (about size 5)

Possible changes:

1. Adjust the speed to 40 Kmh
2. Change drive to 6x4
3. Change icon to the Yag-10
4. Change size to 5
5. Could change name to YaG-10 Barge Carrier

Aren't there Free Icon slots in the game? Where you can add your own icons and that sort of stuff?

Yes, it is possible to give every unit their own icon, but that would require editing the OOB.

The main concern with editing an OOB is that PBEM opponents would get a security flag.

If you only change the icons in the SHP files, there's no security issues.

Hope I understood your question correctly?

Yeah, that was it, i guess i'm going to take some time to make a copy of the game so i can mess around with the OOBs. Btw-What about having the icons skipped in the OOB check routines for secure PBEM? Unless anyone could cheat by changing what they see.

That's a question for the game developers, but I would think any changes to OOB security would be highly unlikely.

I can think of a few ways you could incorporate icons of your choice without security issues:

1. You could just change the generic icons to your personal favourite icons, but you may want them to be somewhat generic.

2. You could change the generic icons to nation specific icons, say German-USA. Which would work best if you mostly play only those nations.

3. Another option is to create a couple of edited SHP files, that are nation specific. So you could create say German-Soviet, German-USA, and German-British SHP files.

Then when you PBEM, or against the AI, just load the SHP files for the nations you are using. This way the trucks will mostly be the correct type.

There are vehicles from the same nation that currently share an icon. And there is at least one icon that's used by German and Allied vehicles. You could always consider it captured.
