One other thing.

While a glass covered flat screen does protect the screen if you get one without glass you have virtually zero issues with background reflections or sun glare. And it's not as if the screens are so fragile they need the glass.

Went from a 1997 CTX 20-inch CRT to a 2007 Samsung 906bw 19-inch widescreen.

I honestly cannot tell the difference in color quality. But as noted in another thread, I don't have the greatest of eye sight...

Don,

some five years ago I went from my good ol´ 19inch Samsung CRT and 1280x1024 res to my 20inch NEC Multisync LCD 2080UX+ and 1600x1200 res.

I own the modell in white/light grey and I´ve never regretted the step. It still offers excellent picture quality and viewing angle with its S-IPS panel. Monitors went through a lot of improvements since then. I guess going by a well known high quality manufacturer like NEC you should find a good piece today for way less money than what I spent in 2005.

If today I´d have to make the decision for a new monitor I´m highly likely to look what NEC or EIZO has to offer in the 26-30inch league.

I guess this one would be my new favorite for the next 5-10 years:

cheers

I have been using a 52 inch Samsung HD TV as my monitor for the last two years and I can honestly say I couldn't be happier. The set up can be a little tricky. First, you have to install a graphics card with an onboard sound chip and HDMI out (for connection to your home theatre amplifier). Second, you have to set up the computer in your living room with your lounge chair about 1.5 metres from your TV and surrounded by suitable work surfaces. (I have a tall table on my right which I use as a mousing surface and my keyboard is on my left on an old extendable monitor arm.) Third, and most importantly, you have to be single. Actually, I think it is this third step which is the key to the whole setup and your passport to a happy and self indulgent life.

Don
I upgraded from a CRT to a Gateway 22" LCD about 4 years ago and I LOVE how it displays the game in general as well as the colour.
I play in windows mode excusively.
